ABOUT WVL
Wisconsin Virtual Learning is a K4-12 online public non-instrumentality charter school chartered through the Northern Ozaukee School District, serving students across the state. We are a non-instrumentality charter school, which means our staff is employed by WVL rather than by the district. Our students learn from home on a school-provided laptop, and our staff works from home too, but this is not a hands-off program. We combine coursework with real human connection, and we stay close to our kids and families along the way. We are a small, tight-knit staff that leans on each other and cares a lot about doing right by every learner.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Some students come to WVL because the traditional path did not work for them. They may be behind on credits, coming back after time away, or navigating academic, social, or emotional obstacles that a typical classroom was not built to handle. Our Alternative Education Teacher meets those students where they are and walks alongside them toward graduation. You will teach and support your students through their coursework in Edgenuity, our alternative education platform, and meet one-on-one with each student every week. Content knowledge matters, but so does patience, flexibility, and the ability to keep a kid believing they can finish.
WHAT YOU''LL DO
Teach and support your students through their Edgenuity coursework, providing direct instruction where needed and keeping them on pace.
Meet one-on-one with each of your students every week to check in, set goals, work through roadblocks, and keep them accountable.
Build individualized and personalized learning plans aligned with grade-level academic standards.
Model social and problem-solving skills, and teach the habits that help a struggling student get back on track.
Monitor attendance and academic progress, keep records up to date in Skyward, and bring student data to concern meetings.
Review student work and support mastery, helping each student build toward the credits they need.
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AND KEEPING STUDENTS ENGAGED
Build a real, trusting relationship with each student and family through regular contact by phone and email.
Monitor participation closely and reach out quickly when a student starts to slip, following WVL''s participation process as needed.
Celebrate progress out loud, big wins and small ones, so students who are used to falling behind get to feel what winning looks like.
COMMUNICATION AND TEAM SUPPORT
Keep clear, honest, consistent communication going with students, families, and caregivers.
Work closely with the school counselor, special education staff, and Student Learning Advocates to wrap support around each student.
Contribute to our school culture by taking part in weekly staff meetings, professional development, and school-wide activities.
SCHEDULE
This is a part-time teaching position. Your week is built around your students'' coursework, weekly one-on-one meetings, and [X] office hours. [Note any in-office or on-campus expectations here.] Your remaining prep time is yours to manage: contacting families, planning, monitoring progress, and completing team projects.
WHAT YOU''LL NEED
A valid Wisconsin DPI Alternative Education teaching license.
A bachelor''s degree in education or a related field.
High school teaching experience, or experience working with high school-age students in a similar setting, is preferred.
A genuine pull toward students who have struggled, and the patience to meet them where they are.
Strong organizational and communication skills, since this role manages many individual student plans and weekly meetings.
Comfort teaching online and learning new tools. Experience with Edgenuity, Canvas, or similar platforms is a plus.
