Virtual Psychiatrist – Inpatient Psychiatric Admissions

Athra is seeking a Board-Certified or Board-Eligible Psychiatrist to provide virtual psychiatric admission coverage for inpatient behavioral health hospitals. This position is fully remote and focused specifically on completing psychiatric admission evaluations and supporting safe, clinically appropriate transitions into inpatient care.

The psychiatrist will work directly with hospital clinical teams and complete evaluations and documentation within each facility's EMR.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide virtual psychiatric admission coverage during assigned day-shift hours.
• Complete timely psychiatric admission evaluations for patients entering inpatient behavioral health treatment.
• Assess psychiatric diagnoses, current symptoms, risk factors, medical and psychiatric history, and appropriateness for inpatient treatment.
• Review and reconcile psychiatric medications upon admission.
• Continue clinically appropriate psychiatric medications when indicated and make initial medication recommendations or adjustments within the psychiatrist's clinical judgment.
• Enter admission evaluations, orders, and required documentation directly into the hospital's EMR.
• Collaborate with nursing, intake, admissions, and other members of the hospital clinical team.
• Respond promptly to admission requests throughout the assigned shift.
• Follow facility policies, medical staff bylaws, regulatory requirements, and Athra clinical and documentation standards.
• Maintain appropriate communication and handoff for admissions or clinical matters extending beyond the assigned shift.

Qualifications

• MD or DO with completion of an accredited psychiatry residency.
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry.
• Active, unrestricted medical license in Texas. Additional state licenses may be beneficial as the program expands.
• Active DEA registration and ability to prescribe psychiatric medications as clinically appropriate.
• Experience in inpatient psychiatry, psychiatric emergency services, or behavioral health admissions strongly preferred.
• Comfortable evaluating high-acuity psychiatric patients through telepsychiatry.
• Strong EMR documentation skills and ability to work within multiple hospital systems.
• Reliable high-speed internet and appropriate private workspace for HIPAA-compliant telehealth services.

Position Highlights

This is a 100% virtual psychiatric position with a 7 on, 7 off schedule with no routine onsite requirement. The role is focused on psychiatric admissions rather than carrying a traditional daily inpatient rounding caseload, allowing the psychiatrist to concentrate on timely evaluations, medication continuity, clinical decision-making, and supporting hospital admissions.

Athra provides centralized scheduling, credentialing support, operational oversight, and coordination with participating hospital teams.
