Duties Description The Department of American Studies at State University of New York at Old Westbury is seeking applications for a temporary two-year, full-time Visiting Assistant Professor position, starting in Fall 2026. We seek candidates in one or more of the following specializations:
African American History/Studies
Latinx History/Studies
Immigration history
Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated ability to contribute to the departments interdisciplinary course offerings and multidisciplinary degrees, and specifically to our new Black Studies major and courses in Latinx history and culture and immigration history. We seek candidates with expertise in Black, Latinx, or Transnational US History, or Black, Latinx, or Transnational American Studies. Candidates for this temporary position will teach three (3) 4-credit courses per semester comprising foundation courses in the Liberal Education Curriculum and advanced courses related to area(s) of expertise. The candidate will be expected to attend department meetings, assist with departmental events, and participate in student advising. Candidates with experience in community-based, experiential learning preferred. A background in the digital humanities and/or media studies is also welcome. Experience teaching an ethnically diverse, working student body preferred.
The Department of American Studies houses a B.A. in Media and Communications, a B.A. in American Studies, and a B.A. in Black Studies. The department also supports several minors and micro-credentials, contributes to the Womens, Gender, and Sexuality major/minor, and the Environmental Studies major, offers content courses in the History major and our School of Educations Master of Arts in Teaching degree, and steers the interdisciplinary Master of Liberal Studies degree.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Requirements:
A Ph.D. degree in US Immigration History, American Studies, Black Studies, Latinx Studies, Caribbean Studies, or related field.
Demonstrated ability to contribute to the departments multidisciplinary programs, including our new Black Studies major, and our shared minors and micro-credentials in Latinx history, media, and culture with the Modern Languages department.
Ability to teach foundational courses in US history and culture.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience teaching at the college level.
Experience teaching or mentoring an ethnically diverse, working student population
Experience in community-based research and outreach
Experience addressing issues of gender, race/ethnicity, immigration, disability, LGBTQIA+, class, or other historically underrepresented communities.
Some experience in the digital humanities and/or media studies.
