Visiting Scholar (Contractual) - MCMSR

Deliverables:

The scholar will provide support to MCM’s work on debt-for-climate swap and adaptation investment issues and related implications for financial stability. This will include the modeling aspects of these issues considering a small open economy vulnerable to climate shocks as well as the most realistic and stochastic nature of climate shocks. He/she will provide input and guidance on model development as well as how such theoretical work can guide empirical analysis with the ultimate goal of providing feedback and suggestions on both internal memos and working papers that focus on policy questions related to these topics.

Expected outputs and deadlines:

The scholar will be expected to work on the implementation of the analytical agenda of the Surveillance and Review Division related to the IMF’s view on sustainable financing and their implication for financial stability from both modeling and empirical standpoints. Specifically, he/she will help develop a dynamic stochastic model, with a full-fledged financial sector to study the interplay between disaster-induced financing and debt sustainability along with their financial stability implications. The framework should offer granularity that allows an in-depth analysis of debt-for-climate swap. It will help to not only inform the Fund’ work on how to maintain sovereign’s creditworthiness while building capacity to cope with climate disasters, but to also understand to what extent the financial markets dynamically interiorize climate risks into their pricing of financial instruments?

MCM continues to be involved in the Fund’s efforts to strengthen its understanding of the interplay between natural disasters and financial stability with a solid theoretical and empirical analytical agenda.
