Job Description

This position is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Chesapeake Visitor Center and satellite visitor information centers while ensuring exceptional visitor services and maintaining Virginia State Visitor Center Certification. The position manages visitor center operations, gift shop merchandising, inventory, purchasing, facility coordination, and visitor information resources, while providing administrative and operational support for tourism programs, initiatives, and special events.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily operation of the Visitor Center and satellite visitor information centers, including gift shop operations, merchandising, inventory management, purchasing, and maintaining visitor information and tourism resources.
  • Supervise staff by recruiting, training, scheduling, coaching, and evaluating performance to ensure quality visitor services and operational coverage.
  • Coordinate visitor services for conventions, meetings, sporting events, group tours, and special events by working with event planners, tourism partners, and community organizations.
  • Maintain and analyze tourism statistics, CRM databases, visitor data, and performance metrics to support departmental planning and reporting.
  • Coordinate purchasing, procurement, financial records, and administrative processes for assigned tourism programs and operations.
  • Assist with the planning, implementation, and administration of tourism initiatives, visitor services, and departmental priorities.
  • Maintain and update tourism websites, destination information, promotional materials, and partner listings to ensure accurate and accessible visitor resources.
  • Respond to visitor inquiries and provide information and referrals for attractions, accommodations, restaurants, meeting venues, golf courses, events, and other tourism-related services.
  • Represent the department at industry meetings, conferences, tradeshows, familiarization tours, committees, and community events to promote Chesapeake as a destination.
  • Support departmental events, special projects, administrative functions, and other tourism-related activities as assigned.

This position requires strong organizational, communication, customer service, and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, build relationships with tourism partners, and provide exceptional service to visitors while supporting the City's tourism initiatives.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree in business, marketing, tourism or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Prefer Travel Marketing Professional (TMP) certification or attainment of certification. Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of travel and tourism principles; knowledge of basic business and administrative practices; knowledge of database, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), point of sale, and records management systems. Knowledge of attractions, events, services, and tourism resources available in the area.

Good communication and customer service skills; excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office, database management, reporting systems, and related business software applications.

Knowledge of marketing production, various social media outlet processes, and production.

Prefer Travel Marketing Professional (TMP) certification or ability for attainment of certification.

Previous supervisory experience.
