POSITIONS: (1) 6.75 Hr. Visually Impaired Special Skills Student Assistant at

Cardinal Elementary (Monday- Friday: 7:50am- 3:05pm; School Year only)

PAYRATE: $16.68 hourly

QUALIFICATIONS:

These individuals will follow one student to multiple areas. This position must also have the ability to learn and demonstrate an understanding of Braille in accordance with National Library Service standards. Must be Highly Qualified per the Department of Education.

Training will be provided to a candidate who does not know braille by the VI/TC Visually Impaired Teacher Consultant (VITC). The VI/TC will also provide software instruction in order for the candidate to use the embossing machine and other relevant software.

SKILLS/RESPONSIBILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Basic First Aid/CPR
  • Behavioral Management
  • Basic Computer Operations/Use of office equipment
  • Basic Communication Skills
  • Typing and Keyboarding Skills
  • Use of braille translation software
  • Attend and participate in training from the Visually Impaired Teacher Consultant (VI/TC)
  • Attend and participate in student braille instruction sessions with VI/TC
  • Work collaboratively with student's team including: VI/TC, Case manager, ancillary staff, and other assistants in order to identify and meet student needs related to accessibility.
  • Ability to participate in professional development opportunities to advance braille skills beyond basic levels. This may include participation in the braille program offered by the National Library Service at no charge to the participant
  • Ability to transcribe materials including books, workbooks, testing material, and classroom work for students with visual impairments
  • Maintain accurate records of all transcripts
  • Maintain a properly labeled file folder on all materials, which should be retained for future use
  • Manage time so as to complete transcriptions as they are needed by consultants
  • Make necessary adaptations of materials for students with visual impairments in conjunction with teacher(s)
  • Remain current in relevant computer technology
  • Maintain a resource file for locating alternative sources of braille materials
  • Coordinate with consultant for students with visual impairment and/or classroom teachers to prepare transcribed materials
