Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and versatile System Test Engineer with a strong background in hardware and software system-level testing to join a Test & Integration team in Columbia, Maryland.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience testing mission-critical systems, Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems, network infrastructure, and/or radio-telephone communications hardware and software.
This role will be responsible for planning, developing, executing, and documenting system-level testing, including informal testing, system verification, and customer acceptance testing. The engineer will also work directly with customers, engineering teams, and technical partners to understand system-level and site-specific requirements, develop test strategies, and resolve technical issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, document, and execute test procedures for both hardware and software systems.
- Apply established testing principles, including test documentation, requirements traceability, test coverage, and verification methodologies.
- Perform functional, performance, security, integration, and system-level testing.
- Develop verification strategies and test specifications based on customer requirements, product requirements, hardware/software specifications, and operational use cases.
- Manage test environments for assigned programs, including test scripts, configurations, test equipment, and supporting infrastructure.
- Identify, analyze, and thoroughly document defects and unexpected system behavior, including clear steps for reproducing issues.
- Review and interpret system and software requirements from a testability and verification perspective.
- Maintain organized test records, results, and supporting documentation.
- Analyze historical test results to identify recurring issues, trends, and potential areas of improvement.
- Communicate technical issues, test results, risks, and project status to Test Management, Engineering teams, customers, and other stakeholders.
- Support informal testing, system verification, customer acceptance testing, and related Test & Integration activities.
Required Qualifications
- Hands-on experience testing Air Traffic Management systems, radio-control equipment, VoIP systems, advanced networking environments, or comparable mission-critical systems.
- Experience developing internal and customer-deliverable system-level test plans and procedures, preferably for mission-critical equipment within a production environment.
- Experience working with telecommunications systems and technologies, including VoIP, T1, ISDN, POTS, and TDM.
- Ability to develop clear, concise test plans and test procedures based on system requirements.
- Strong experience documenting, tracking, and communicating system defects and unexpected behavior.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and technical troubleshooting skills.
- Minimum of 5 years of test-related professional experience, including hands-on hardware testing.
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
Preferred Technical Experience
- Experience working with digital and analog telecommunications, including VoIP and radio systems.
- Experience using industry-standard electronic and telecommunications test equipment, including:
o Oscilloscopes
o Transmission Impairment Measurement Sets (TIMS)
o Multimeters
o Viavi T-BERD
o Sage Multi-Channel Test Instruments
- Experience with commercial performance, simulation, and analysis testing tools such as VOTER, GL Communications TDM solutions, or comparable platforms.
- Familiarity with industry and government standards, including ED-137, MIL-STD-461G, FCC 47 Part B, FAA-G-2100H, FAA NextGen, and DO-278A.
- Experience with network and packet-analysis tools, particularly Wireshark.
- Familiarity with Linux operating systems and fundamental IP networking concepts.
- Experience with defect and requirements-management platforms such as JIRA and JAMA.
- Strong understanding of system testing methodologies, verification and validation, Agile/Scrum development processes, and project lifecycles.
