    Description

    The Town of Charlton is seeking Volunteer Firefighters to join our team. Candidates must successfully complete the Massachusetts Fire Academy Call/Volunteer Recruit Firefighter Training Program within the timeframe established by the department (typically within the first 12–18 months of appointment), unless the member holds equivalent Firefighter I/II certification recognized by the Massachusetts Fire Training Council.The Call/Volunteer Recruit Program is conducted by the Massachusetts Fire Academy and leads to certification consistent with NFPA Firefighter I and II standards.Members must maintain all required certifications, including EMT, CPR, and applicable continuing education requirements.Failure to complete required training within the established timeframe may result in restriction of duties, change in status, or termination of volunteer membership.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • Knowledge of basic firefighting and emergency response procedures.
    • Ability to provide emergency medical care consistent with EMT certification level.
    • Ability to operate firefighting and EMS equipment safely.
    • Ability to function effectively within a structured chain of command.
    • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment under emergency conditions.
    • Physical strength and stamina to perform strenuous tasks in hazardous environments.
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Commitment to teamwork and professional conduct.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • High school diploma or GED.
    • Minimum age requirement as established by department policy.
    • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license. 
    • Current Massachusetts EMT certification (Basic or higher). 
    • Current CPR certification at the healthcare provider level.
    • Firefighter I/II certification or ability to obtain within timeframe established by department policy.
    • Successful completion of department onboarding and probationary requirements.
    • Ability to meet department medical and physical fitness standards.

    WORK CONDITIONS

    Work involves exposure to fire, smoke, toxic substances, hazardous materials, infectious disease, extreme weather conditions, and physically demanding environments. Duties may require heavy lifting, climbing, crawling, confined space entry, and extended operations under stressful conditions.

    Volunteer members respond to emergencies at all hours and must maintain readiness consistent with department participation requirements.

    PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS

    Volunteer members must meet minimum participation standards as established by department policy, including response percentages, training attendance, and certification maintenance. Failure to meet participation standards may result in inactive status or termination of membership.
