The Orange City Fire Departments Prevention Reserve Program is a volunteer-based, professional development and career preparation program. This program gives members of the community the opportunity to augment full-time career Fire Prevention staff with the delivery of fire prevention, public education, and community service, and to assist staff captains with special projects and tasks.
Fire Prevention Reserves Volunteers donate their time and service to the community based on civic and humanitarian reasons, as well as for professional/career development.
Examples of Duties
Performs fire and life safety inspections in non-complex facilities as directed to ensure conformance with laws, codes, and ordinances.
Assists Fire Safety Specialists with fire and life safety inspections for special events.
Assists Fire Safety Specialists with public education activities and events.
Under the direction of a Fire Safety Specialist or Hazardous Materials Specialist, responds to complaints or referrals of fire and life safety hazards and/or code violations.
Maintains fire prevention office, equipment, resources, materials, and is responsible for maintenance of assigned vehicles.
Drives and operates department vehicles in a manner consistent with safety and due regard for the welfare of the public and personnel.
Maintains uniforms, protective clothing, and assigned safety equipment in a neat, clean, safe manner and in readiness to perform duties.
Participates in all assigned training.
Attends fire prevention association meetings at the discretion of the program coordinator, as available.
Assists with toy collection and delivery for the annual Spark of Love toy drive.
May be assigned to assist the prevention, training, and administrative Staff Captain as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
Typical Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application submittal.
Must have completed, or be enrolled in, courses in a fire related field.
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License, automobile insurance, and a satisfactory driving record are required at time of appointment. This volunteer position is subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program, which periodically provides the City of Orange Risk Management Division with the incumbents driving record and status.
Must be able to commit to volunteering a minimum of seven (7) hours a week during operating hours of the bureau (Monday - Thursday, 9:00am - 4:00pm).
Must be able to pass a background check.
Must be of good health and pass a medical exam.
SELECTION PROCESS:
WORKERS COMPENSATION INSURANCE:
Volunteer Fire Prevention Reserves are covered by Workers Compensation Insurance which covers injuries or illness occurring while volunteering, if the injury or illness is determined to be related to activities as a Fire Prevention Reserve.
UNIFORMS:
The City of Orange provides uniforms to all Volunteer Fire Prevention Reserves. Fire Prevention Reserves must provide their own boots.
