Dutchess County Water & Wastewater Authority is seeking a Water and Wastewater System Operator Trainee. The operator will be in training and assisting with the operations and maintenance of water and wastewater systems, owned by DCWWA, within the limits of Dutchess County. Water systems include a Grade IIB, C water treatment facilities and Grade D distribution systems. Wastewater systems include Grade II and III treatment plants, including maintenance of collection systems. Training opportunities for the right individual could lead to Water & Wastewater Operator Certifications. Water & Wastewater Operator Trainee and is a competitive position under the NYS Civil Service Classification system and subject to a competitive exam. The position is eligible for annual salary increases based on merit for the first nine years if performance is found to be fully satisfactory. Per the Salary Policy, A newly hired employee will be eligible for a merit increase on the following January 1 or upon completion of the six-month probationary period, whichever comes later. The position is eligible for longevity increases after the completion of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service. Cost of living increases are determined annually by the Authoritys Board of Directors and are not guaranteed. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Learns techniques related to the water system through observations and assisting with repairs; Perform required water and wastewater regulatory sampling; Keep log of water and wastewater plant operations and related records; Investigates and repairs water and wastewater leaks; Performs service line mark-outs Assists in making taps on street water mains for service to consumers; Learns and assists in, installing and performing related maintenance tasks to hydrants, gates, mains, pumps, sprinklers, meters, etc.; Assists and operates a line tracer to locate water mains and service; Water distribution service line flushing, exercising of valves, water main location and repair work. Learns how to investigate, locate and repair water and wastewater leaks; Assists in cleaning, repairing, raising and lowering curb and gate boxes; Perform required water and wastewater regulatory sampling EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Knowledge of the practice, tools terminology and safety precautions used in the maintenance and repair of water systems; Skill in working with the tools and equipment of the trade; Ability to read plans or sketches; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; Ability to withstand heavy labor for extended periods in emergencies; Ability to get along well with others; Personal characteristics necessary to perform the duties of the position; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EITHER: One year of experience which involved work in the installation or maintenance of water, wastewater, plumbing or related lines and systems; Two years of experience involving building maintenance or construction. Ability to perform routine physical work; ability to lift heavy weights; ability to follow oral instructions; willingness to work under all weather conditions; sobriety; physical endurance; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Possession of a New York State driver license at time of appointment and to maintain position. Must be 18 years old.
