    Job Description

    The City of Oxnard's Wastewater Division is seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Wastewater Treatment Plant Electrician to join our dedicated maintenance team. This position is essential to maintaining the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the City's wastewater treatment facilities and collection system infrastructure. Working collaboratively with Operations, Collections, and Maintenance staff, the selected candidate will help ensure the continuous operation of critical public infrastructure that protects public health and the environment.

    Under the general direction of the Wastewater Electrical Supervisor and Senior Wastewater Treatment Plant Electrician, the successful candidate will perform skilled installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and testing of industrial electrical systems, motors, motor control centers (MCCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), instrumentation, and process control equipment. The position requires the ability to diagnose complex electrical issues, interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and technical manuals, and perform work with a high degree of accuracy, professionalism, and attention to safety.

    The ideal candidate will have a strong background in industrial electrical systems and a thorough understanding of applicable federal, state, and local electrical codes, including the National Electrical Code (NEC). They will demonstrate sound technical judgment, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with others to support reliable wastewater operations.

    WHAT YOU’LL DO:

    • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on industrial electrical systems supporting wastewater treatment and collection facilities.

    • Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain motors, motor control centers (MCCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), low- and medium-voltage switchgear, transfer switches, and other electrical equipment.

    • Inspect, test, calibrate, and maintain electrical equipment, instrumentation, and process control devices to ensure reliable system operation.

    • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, technical manuals, and specifications.

    • Install conduit, pull and terminate conductors, and perform electrical installations in accordance with applicable codes and industry standards.

    • Diagnose electrical failures using industry-standard testing equipment and implement appropriate corrective actions.

    • Perform electrical maintenance and repairs at the wastewater treatment plant, lift stations, and stormwater pump stations.

    • Coordinate maintenance activities with Operations and Maintenance staff to minimize equipment downtime and operational impacts.

    • Maintain accurate maintenance records and work orders using the City's Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system.

    • Assist with the planning, testing, commissioning, and startup of new electrical equipment associated with Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs).

    • Inspect, test, troubleshoot, and maintain standby generators, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and emergency power distribution systems.

    • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate, and repair facility security camera (CCTV) systems and associated monitoring equipment.

    • Follow all applicable electrical safety procedures, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), arc flash, confined space entry, and other applicable safety requirements.

    • Perform work safely in industrial wastewater environments, including hazardous locations and around energized electrical equipment, in accordance with City safety policies and applicable regulations.

    • Participate in emergency response, scheduled plant shutdowns, and rotational on-call assignments as required.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED / SUPERVISION RECEIVED: 

    Receives general supervision on routine items which are performed according to established standards and procedures and receives specific work instruction regarding non-routine matters and deadlines.


    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: 

    This is a stand-alone classification in the Trades job family.


    WORK SCHEDULE: 

    The normal work week is Monday through Thursday 6:00 am to 4:30 pm. Depending on the work assignment staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work hours. In addition, this position may be required to be available to work additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs. Employees will be required to work rotational stand-by assignments outside of normal working hours and report to work on a callback basis, as needed, within a designated response time. Standby assignments are at the discretion of the Division Head. The City does not offer hybrid or remote work.
