Water and Sewer Heavy Equipment Operator

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED. Two years of experience operating heavy construction equipment to include backhoe, excavator, lowboy and payloader are required. Must possess a CDL/Class A. An operator proficiency test will be administered during the interview selection process.

This advanced position is responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment, including backhoes, skid steers, excavators, loaders, dump trucks, cranes, and other specialized machinery. The incumbent performs complex grounds maintenance and construction-related projects involving fueling, grading, drainage improvements, large-scale landscaping installations, land clearing, and other heavy equipment operations. In addition to equipment operation, this position plays an important role in training and mentoring lower-level staff on the proper operation of heavy equipment, safe work practices, and established safety protocols, thereby promoting workforce development and operational continuity.

Recent capital improvement projects have created an increased demand for skilled heavy equipment operators to safely and efficiently perform heavy landscaping and grounds maintenance activities. Filling this position is critical to maintaining project schedules, supporting ongoing infrastructure improvements, and ensuring work is completed in a safe and cost-effective manner. All Grounds classifications support the WAVE Strategic Plan under the Exceptional Customer Experience initiative by providing essential services to both internal and external customers. These services include work performed at pump stations, rights-of-way (ROWs), canal crossings, vacant properties, and other Water and Sewer Department facilities. The classification also supports the Efficient and Innovative Organization initiative by ensuring the division is adequately staffed to meet operational demands, improve service delivery, expand capabilities, and continue advancing the Grounds operation to a level that enhances the Countys overall infrastructure maintenance program.
