The Position

The City of Beavertons Public Works Department is hiring two Water Distribution Technicians (Public Works Utility Technician 1) who will help ensure the uninterrupted delivery of safe and aesthetically pleasing water to the residents of Beaverton. These journey-level positions are responsible for the efficient and cost-effective installation, maintenance, and repair of city water distribution systems.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, SEIU classified, and DOT-covered position. The position will be scheduled to work four ten-hour shifts each week, with either Monday or Friday off. Individuals in this position will be subject to random drug screens and breath alcohol tests in accordance with DOT guidelines. There is one vacancy. This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for any Water Distribution Utility Technician 1 vacancies that occur in the next six months.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, repair, replace water mains and service distribution lines including meters and meter boxes. Conduct pressure and leak checks.
  • Perform disinfection procedures as required to ensure sanitary system conditions.
  • Perform hydrant and vale maintenance. Operate system control valves, valve exercise machine, and small vac machine.
  • Collect water samples and deliver to testing laboratory. Perform routing monitoring and diagnosis using telemetry equipment.
  • Set up traffic safety controls and shoring. Enter confined spaces following established procedures.
  • Operate heavy equipment, including vactors, loaders, dump trucks, street cutting saws, jackhammers, and trenching machine.
  • Inspect new construction to ensure compliance.
  • Repair concrete curbs, sidewalks, driveways, and landscapes after utility repairs
  • Read meters and turn water on and off due to non-payment.
  • Respond to emergencies and carry after-hours pager.
  • Diagnose and resolve routine water distribution problems.
  • Additional duties are outlined in the Public Works Utility Technician 1 class specification.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma and/or GED, and
  • Two years experience in water distribution systems; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.

Licensing and special requirements

  • Commercial Drivers License Class B with air brake and tank endorsement required within 360 days of hire.
  • Flagger training required within 12 months of hire.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required within 12 months of hire.
  • Oregon Health Authority Water Distribution Level 1 license required within 1 year of hire.
  • Ability to pass reference checks and education verification and satisfy the requirements of a background check.
  • Ability to satisfy the requirements of a pre-employment physical exam, respirator fitness test, and drug screen.

Compensation

Wage range: $27.73 - $37.16 hourly

Starting rate will be determined based on an analysis of related work experience as outlined in the Oregon Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps within the posted wage range may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience.
