Job Summary and Essential Functions
This position typically provides the performance of semi-skilled duties in the installation and repair of pipes, conduits, meters, hydrants, and fittings, some of which will require entry into confined spaces; and deals courteously and effectively with fellow employees and others.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Assists in making of all size taps, types of joints, and in repairing all types of broken mains, valves, meters, lines, and hydrants. • Installs water meters, service piping, valves, and components associated with the water distribution system. • Removes and/or replaces dirt, water, materials, and/or debris from the work site. • Reads, removes, and replaces water meters. • Handles and mixes bags of cement and maneuvers in a wheelbarrow. • Performs routine tasks with hand tools (shovels, rakes, wrenches, trowels, etc.). • Works on emergency repairs and services with minimal supervision. • Performs light maintenance on tools and equipment. • Responds to customer inquiries and investigates customer complaints associated with the water distribution system. • Performs valve and hydrant maintenance. • Performs flow test and record data. • Obtains water samples. • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
High School diploma or equivalent; Six (6) months of experience in general maintenance and construction in a utility environment preferred; Must have and maintain a valid drivers license for South Carolina with a safe driving record; Special Requirements:
• Must be able to obtain a valid Class B CDL within 6 months of employment; • Must be able to obtain a Class D Water Distribution License within 24 Months of employment; • Subject to 24 hour on-call status; • Departmental testing may be administered during interview; • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.
This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of sampling procedures and sample site locations for bacteriological testing. • Knowledge of the use of pumps, compressors, and other appropriate equipment. • Knowledge of pipefitting skills, of water taps, and new water line construction practices. • Ability to operate utility vehicles, backhoe, mini excavators, and related equipment. • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. • Ability to write legible and descriptive reports on duties performed. • Ability to deal with the public, including handling potential difficult customers and volatile situations. • Ability to qualify physically for wearing self-contained breathing equipment. • Ability to prepare purchase orders and determine benefits eligibility. • Ability to use small office equipment, computers, and highly technical computer applications. • Ability to use or repair small, medium, and heavy equipment and machinery.
Physical Demands
This position requires the employee to reach, pull, and push with hands and arms; stand; and use hands to handle, feel, finger, grasp, or operate objects, tools, or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; and walk, talk, and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to ninety-five (95) pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Conditions
The work is regularly performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs. Normal working hours are Monday through Thursday 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties, and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
