The Department of Environmental Services (DES), Water Sewer Streets (WSS) Bureau, is seeking a Water Maintenance Supervisor to join our team. This role provides daily supervision to two crews responsible for ensuring a reliable supply of high-quality water for both domestic use and fire protection for a metropolitan area of 250,000 people. The team supports this mission by locating and repairing leaks, installing new service connections, and maintaining proper system pressure and flow. Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/equivalent;
  • Three (3) years of trades work experience in water distribution, water utility maintenance, or similar environment;
  • Experience providing leadership to trades workers and/or managing trades projects; and
  • Valid driver's license.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Providing maintenance and operation of water valves and fire hydrants;
  • Pipe-fitting and shoring;
  • Planning and managing construction activities;
  • Operating maintenance management software, SCADA, Asset Management System, and Microsoft Office Suite; and/or
  • Performing applicable administrative functions.

Possession of one or more of the following Licenses/Certifications preferred:

  • Commercial Driver License (CDL) A or B;
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10; and/or
  • Possession of a Virginia Water Works Operator Class 5 License.

This position requires learning and following all safety rules and regulations pertaining to job functions which include attending all required safety classes and meetings in order to ensure a safe working environment and to ensure team members are practicing the required safety rules and regulations.

Work is performed in a combination of office and outdoors environments. Outdoor conditions may include all types of weather, moving traffic, exposure to drafts, noise, dust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment.

Additional Information

Work hours: Monday - Friday, 6:30 am to 3:00 pm; However, the employee may be required to work other shifts and overtime as needed. Must be available for callbacks and emergencies.

  • Directing on-site crews through a range of technical procedures, including water main repairs, valve installations and new water service installations;
  • Planning, scheduling, and assigning daily crew activities while ensuring all work is performed safely and in compliance with County regulations, industry standards, and established accident-prevention practices;
  • Training staff and overseeing the proper use of specialized tools, equipment, safety techniques, and technical procedures;
  • Responding to emergencies by coordinating team actions, resolving issues in the field, and ensuring appropriate safety measures are followed;
  • Managing operational resources to ensure crews have the supplies, tools, materials, and equipment necessary to complete assigned work;
  • Performing administrative functions such as timekeeping, activity and work order reports, billing coordination, and preparation of documentation for personal injuries, accidents, incidents, or vehicle damage;
  • Supporting budget tracking, material usage monitoring, and inventory control for tools, equipment, and supplies; and
  • Communicating and coordinating with residents, contractors, Miss Utility locators, engineers, surveyors, and internal facility maintenance staff.
