WATER MAINTENANCE WORKER
Wage: $23.36 per hour
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Performs semi-skilled and skilled duties in the operation of a water distribution system; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is work involving responsibility for semi-skilled and skilled maintenance activities at a water distribution system, the keeping of water consumption records and related duties. Work is performed under immediate or general supervision depending upon the assignment. Supervision may be exercised over laborers.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
Reads, removes and resets water meters in the homes of consumers;
Assists in laying mains and installing hydrants and valves;
Assists in making taps on street water for service to consumers;
Makes adjustments and repairs to such fixtures as hydrants, valves, mains, pumps and motors, including electronic telemetry equipment, high output pumps and pressure activated flow equipment;
Investigates customer service requests;
Maintains meter records;
Repairs and tests meters;
Opens and closes water services as directed;
Maintains inventories of meters and supplies necessary for operation;
Operates a Motor Vehicle;
Assists in emergency call outs, when requested.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and principles of the work; mechanical aptitude; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; ability to withstand heavy labor for extended period in emergencies; ability to make simple calculations; ability to record figures accurately and to submit legible written records; courtesy and tact in dealing with the public; mechanical aptitude; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a New York State high school equivalency diploma and one year of experience as a plumbers helper or water maintenance workers helper or mechanic in the repair of small part mechanisms, pumps or motors; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS:
Eligibility for an appropriate level New York State drivers license at time of application for appointment. Possession of license at time of appointment.
