Summary
The Water Meter Technician is responsible for overseeing the installation and replacement of water submeters, along with the maintenance and troubleshooting of Automated Meter Reading (AMR) systems across a portfolio of commercial properties. This is a hands-on, field-based role focused on meter reads, system reliability, and hardware performance across multi-tenant buildings.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform routine meter reads and ensure accurate data collection across assigned properties.
- Oversee the installation and replacement of water submeters by licensed plumbers and ensure remote reading devices (Next Century or similar) are properly installed within landlord-maintained infrastructure.
- Maintain, test, and troubleshoot submeter and AMR systems, including transmitters, wiring, and signal connectivity.
- Program, wire, and support Automated Meter Reading (AMR) systems, with training provided as needed.
- Swap AMR hardware, including transmitters, receivers, and related devices.
- Replace batteries and perform preventative maintenance on metering equipment.
- Conduct inspections to verify proper installation, functionality, and accurate data transmission.
- Document work performed, including photographing meter conditions and maintaining accurate service records.
- Coordinate with property managers and tenants to schedule installations, inspections, and repairs.
- Respond to urgent service needs, including occasional after-hours calls.
- Travel to multiple properties throughout Florida (primarily day travel), with occasional short-term overnight travel within the Southeast.
Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Experience in field service, utilities, low-voltage systems, or similar hands-on technical roles.
- Ability to program and wire Automated Meter Reading (AMR) systems, or willingness to be trained.
- Basic understanding of domestic water supply systems within commercial buildings.
- Experience with submetering systems or Next Century equipment is helpful but not required.
- Comfortable using web-based applications, mobile devices, and basic computer systems in a field environment.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to document work clearly, including photographing meter conditions.
- Ability to work safely, stay organized, and remain focused while working independently in the field.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision, while maintaining strong organization, attention to detail, and a focus on safety.
- Willingness to learn, take direction, and maintain a positive, team-oriented attitude.
- Comfortable climbing step ladders, extension ladders, and working at heights using lifts as needed.
- Willingness to travel throughout Florida (primarily day travel), with occasional short-term overnight travel within the Southeast U.S.
Physical Requirements
- Lift up to 75 pounds and operate tools and equipment.
- Comfortable using hand tools and working with small components and wiring.
- Comfortable climbing step ladders, extension ladders, and working at heights using lifts as needed.
