Position Information

"Powering the Pumps That Power Our Community"

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply, Water System Operations Division is hiring a Water Plant Maintenance Mechanic to install, repair, maintain and overhaul a variety of water pumping plant and related water systems equipment.

What You Will Do:

  • Install, maintain, repair, and overhaul water pumping equipment and plant machinery.

  • Service pumps and motors, including deepwell turbine and horizontal centrifugal units.

  • Inspect and test pumping plant equipment.

  • Assists with the installation, maintenance, overhaul and repair of electrical and electronic devices.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Special Working Conditions:

  • Work hours are Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM.
  • Will work around high voltage electricity and heavy machinery.
  • Exposure to chlorine gas and moving machinery.
  • Work on scaffolds and elevated surfaces.
  • Some equipment is located underground, on roofs, or in remote areas with uneven terrain.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey level skills and duties of this position, or which show equivalent competence in the repair and overhaul of pumping plant, power plant, marine engine room, or related industrial type equipment, or in the repair and overhaul of rotating machinery such as motorized vehicles, heavy motorized vehicles and equipment, construction equipment, aircraft, and heavy industrial equipment and machinery.

Examples of Qualifying Experience: Airplane Mechanic, Fleet/Auto Mechanic, Heavy Construction Equipment Mechanic, Machinist, Pumping Plant Mechanic, Industrial Plant Mechanic, Power Plant Mechanic, and Millwright.

Must be able to:

  • Perform maintenance and repair of electrically operated pumps and related equipment, including altitude, cone, and pressure reducing valves, chlorinators, and electric motors.
  • Operate mechanic's hand tools and shop equipment such as drill presses, electric cutters, grinders, pipe threaders, welding equipment, and sanders to repair and overhaul motors, pumps, valves, and gauges.
  • Maintain and repair electrical pumping equipment.
  • Apply basic principles of electricity and hydraulics.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical defects in pumping plant equipment.
  • Supervise staff and maintain positive working relationships.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:

Possession of an appropriate valid drivers license (automobile/Type 3), prior to appointment.
