Columbus Water and Power, Division of Water, is seeking qualified candidates for the full-time position of Water Plant Operator I at the Hap Cremean Water Plant. The plant is a 24/7, 365-day surface water facility that can produce 125 million gallons per day, employing primary clarification, lime softening, recarbonation, ozone, BAF filtration, UV disinfection, corrosion control, fluoridation, and chlorine disinfection.
This full-time position, under the supervision of a Water Plant Operator II, will provide an uninterrupted supply of drinking water that meets EPA standards and the distribution systems demands during an assigned shift. Performs chemical analysis of water for proper treatment to maintain quality standards set by the OEPA. Responsible for ensuring OEPA compliance and meeting the Hap Cremean Water Plant performance measures during assigned hours of responsibility. Responsible for complying with the City, department, and division policies and procedures. Performs cleaning tasks, cleans and maintains chemical feed systems, and areas assigned throughout the treatment plant. Performs related duties as required.
Work Schedule:
Third Shift, from Friday - Tuesday, 11:00 pm - 7:00 am (Wednesday and Thursday days off).
To be considered, as stated in the minimum qualifications section below, candidates must have a valid Environment Protection Agency (EPA) State of Ohio Class I or higher or Water Supply Operator Certificate for water treatment. A valid driver's license is required. An Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) State of Ohio Operational Laboratory Certificate, with operational laboratory approval for the assigned water treatment facility by completion of the probationary period.
Examples of Work
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Operates a computerized Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA) to control and monitor the flow and chemical processing of water;
Operates, controls, and monitors electric motors, pumps, and/or valves to regulate the flow of water through the plant;
Adds specified amounts of chemicals or adjusts automatic devices to add chemicals into tanks to disinfect, deodorize, and/or clarify water;
Conducts required laboratory equipment maintenance, periodic laboratory standardization, and laboratory equipment calibrations to obtain and maintain OEPA operational laboratory certification specific to assigned water treatment facility;
Assists in regulating flow rates and distribution of water throughout the plant using a computer system and/or manual controls;
Collects and tests water samples on and off plant grounds to determine compliance with internal and external regulations;
Records quantitative data such as chemical levels, residual content, and water turbidity;
Backwashes filters by reversing the flow of water;
Maintains general cleanliness of the laboratory area and facility;
Ensures delivery, unloading, and storage of chemicals following established protocol;
May change and unload chlorine tanks using hand tools and power tools;
May work around or with hazardous chemicals and clean chemical spills or leaks while wearing the proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) State of Ohio Class I or higher Water Supply Operator certificate for water treatment works.
Possession of a valid driver's license.
Possession of a valid Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) State of Ohio Laboratory Certificate with operational approval specifically for the assigned water treatment facility by the completion of the probationary period.
