Description:

This position plays a crucial role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Water Reclamation Facility, reporting directly to the Water Reclamation Facility Superintendent. The Lead Operator is responsible for coordinating and assisting in the activities of the facility operators, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and maintaining the efficient and effective functioning of water treatment processes. The role involves monitoring equipment performance, troubleshooting issues, and implementing preventive maintenance measures. The Lead Operator also collaborates with the management team to develop and implement operational strategies, contribute to staff training programs, and participate in the continuous improvement of facility processes. Strong leadership, technical proficiency, and commitment to environmental stewardship are essential qualities for success in this position.

Duties:

  • Leads and coordinates daily tasks/duties of the operators in the Water Reclamation Facility.
  • Ensures compliance with environmental regulations and standards in the treatment process.
  • Monitors gauges, meters, and controls at the Water Reclamation Facility, composting facility, and sewer pump stations.
  • Accurately and legibly records readings from meters and gauges.
  • Performs visual inspections of plant processes and equipment and makes recommendations as needed.
  • Leads operations in:
    • Process equipment, electrical controls, valves, and pumps.
    • Sludge pumping and maintaining sludge depths in clarifiers.
    • Preliminary treatment, primary sedimentation, trickling filters, aerators, and ultraviolet disinfection.
    • Sludge thickening, digestion, and disposal processes.
    • Sewer pumping stations.
  • Responsible for:
    • Compost being turned, daily temperature readings, and taking compost samples.
    • Taking plant samples as required by the Division of Water Quality.
  • Assists:
    • In the maintenance of the buildings and grounds.
    • The Water Reclamation Facility Superintendent in training of other plant operators.
    • In the safety training of plant operators.
  • Recognizes changes in normal operations, determines the cause, and reports to the proper authority.
  • Responds to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis when on-call.
  • Follows the Springville City Public Works safety program.

All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Utah driver's license.
  • Must have four (4) years of Wastewater experience, or a combination of education and experience in Wastewater, or experience in a Wastewater-related field will be considered.
  • Utah Grade III or IV Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Must be within 20 minutes response time to the facility when assigned to on-call duty.
  • Valid Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement within six (6) months of hire date, and a clean driving record.
  • Confined Space certification within twelve (12) months of hire date and training every three (3) years.
  • LTAP Heavy Equipment certification for front-end loader, backhoe, and skid steer, or willing and able to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire date.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

Must have basic knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the Water Reclamation Facility. Must be able to work as a team member. Must write legibly and be able to read and understand all aspects of required record-keeping at the treatment plant. Must be able to use a computer and be familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel. Must be able to operate front-end loader, backhoe, and skid steer.

Physical Demands:

Must be capable of moving over various terrains, and capable of frequent stooping and bending. Must be capable of lifting up to 75 pounds regularly, climb ladders, enter manholes, boxes, open trenches, and other underground utilities. Must be able to work in all weather conditions and around heavy equipment. Must be willing and able to accept exposure to odors and hazardous conditions associated with wastewater.
