Job Description

Summary: Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in a moderately complex operation, monitoring, and servicing of equipment and chemical treatment analysis in a wastewater treatment plant. Utilizes asset management software, performs lab analysis, collects samples and assists in plant operations as needed. Operates light and heavy equipment.

Supervision Received: Director of Public Works, Water Resource Recovery Superintendent and Foreman

Essential Job Functions:

  • On an assigned shift, operates pumps, control panels, chemical feeders, filters and other wastewater plant equipment; adjusts valves and controls, takes samples and performs routine laboratory analysis.
  • Makes routine rounds monitoring the facility for upsets and recording and trending data; notifies supervisors of any changes within the system; assist with diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining plant equipment.
  • Utilizes asset management software to maintain an accurate inventory of spare parts
  • Work as an analyst to help operate and maintain a certified lab under the guidance of the Lab Manager.
  • Perform regulatory sampling and analysis for plant operations.
  • Maintains laboratory inventory, maintain on-line instrumentation, and lab equipment
  • Adheres to the Quality Control/Quality Assurance program for lab and process instruments.
  • Performs work after hours on an as needed basis and will be included on the on-call schedule which includes working weekends and after hours.
  • Must be willing to be fit tested and go under air when accessing hazardous confined spaces.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • The nature of this position requires the ability to respond to emergencies in a timely fashion.

Minimum Qualifications: Some knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment, and methods used in wastewater treatment and pumping operations. Some knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with wastewater plant and related activities and of necessary safety precautions. Demonstrated knowledge of chemistry, excel spreadsheets, process on-line instrumentation. Ability to make accurate readings, keep records and perform regulatory reporting. Ability to take verbal and written instructions. Meets qualifications of Waste Water Plant Operator. Ability to work according to a prescribed routine and to remain alert through long periods of time. Ability to take accurate readings, to keep routine records, and to make arithmetic computations. Ability to maintain, repair, and adjust water pumps, chemical feed machines, and other plant equipment.

Education: High school or trade school graduate, preferable including courses in chemistry and related subjects. Completion of water or wastewater training school.

Experience: Experience as a Waste Water Plant Operator OR Experience in a Waste Water or Water Lab OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirement: Must have a North Dakota Water/Wastewater Operator's certification at time of hire or have the ability to obtain within 1 year. Must have a valid North Dakota commercial driver license (Class B) or have ability to obtain within 6 months. Must be insurable under the City's motor vehicle insurance policy.

Position is safety sensitive and requires pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and is subject to controlled substance requirements at all times when on duty.

Equipment Used in Job Performance: Laboratory equipment, computer, telephone, lawn mower, snow blower, hand and power tools, forklift, hoists.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk; hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
