The Water Well Drilling Rig Operator is responsible for operating, maintaining, and transporting drilling equipment used to construct water wells. This position ensures drilling operations are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and environmental regulations. The operator works closely with drilling crew members and supervisors and performs work outdoors in varying terrain and weather conditions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operate water well drilling rigs and related equipment safely and efficiently
Set up, level, and secure drilling rigs at job sites
Monitor drilling parameters and ground conditions; make adjustments as needed
Assist with drilling, casing installation, grouting, and well development activities
Maintain accurate drilling logs, depth records, and material usage documentation
Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs on drilling equipment
Load, transport, and secure equipment, tools, and materials to and from job sites
Follow all company safety policies, OSHA standards, and environmental regulations
Identify and report equipment issues, hazards, or unsafe conditions
Communicate effectively with crew members, supervisors, and clients when required
Maintain job site cleanliness and ensure proper disposal of waste materials
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required
Prior experience operating drilling rigs, heavy equipment, or related machinery preferred
Mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot basic equipment issues
Knowledge of drilling procedures, safety practices, and ground conditions preferred
Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred depending on equipment
Ability to read and follow technical instructions, maps, and work orders
Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy materials and equipment
Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, and climb for extended periods
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather, terrain, and environmental conditions
Work Environment
Outdoor construction and drilling sites
Exposure to noise, dust, mud, water, and heavy machinery
Requires adherence to strict safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
