Salary: $36.9510 - $43.3620/hourly

• Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint of the range.

NATURE OF WORK:

This is semi-skilled work; performing maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment and facilities, related to the water treatment plant. Work may involve, at times, serving as lead worker on a crew maintaining and repairing water treatment plant machinery, equipment, and facilities. Employees may be assigned tasks of a similar or higher-level classification to gain experience and training in preparation for advancement. Safety equipment such as hardhat, safety glasses, reflective vest, gloves, steel-toed shoes, respirator, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and other protective equipment is worn.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Under the direction or with the assistance of a Water/Sewer Mechanic, dismantles or partially dismantles electric motors, pumps, valves, chlorinators, chemical feeders, filters, refrigeration equipment.
• Repairs or replaces defective parts using a variety of power and hand tools.
• Unloads chlorine cylinders, assists with taking empty cylinders offline and placing new cylinders on-line.
• Inspects machines and equipment periodically, lubricating moving parts, or replacing worn parts to prevent breakdown or malfunctioning.
• Cleans basins and performs maintnance on additional equipment.
• May operate plant equipment to process and distribute water.
• Performs unskilled manual tasks (e.g., ground maintenance, painting, janitorial) as needed.
• May assist Water/Sewer Mechanic in the completion of major tasks.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

• Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Must possess a valid driver's license.
• Must possess two years of related experience in general mechanical/electrical work, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

• Must obtain a forklift operator's certification within 18 months of employment.
• Must undergo annual medical surveillance to comply with OSHA respiratory requirements.
• Must remain appropriately shaven to safely use SCBA.
• Must be willing and able to obtain a National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS 100, 200, 700, & 800 Certification within 18 months of employment and maintain it as a condition of employment.
• Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in mechanical/electrical repairs.
• Knowledge of safety standards connected with mechanical and electrical activities.
• Ability to operate test equipment and understand test readings.
• Ability to complete required reports in a clear and concise manner.
• Ability to perform simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Ability to read and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to use a personal computer for word processing, spreadsheet, and data entry.
• Knowledge of metal fabrication, power distribution, electrical wiring, general construction, process control, pipe fitting, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, electric motors, pumps, chemistry, microbiology, and other areas associated with water plant operations.
• Knowledge of safety standards and precautions connected with water plant operations and high/low voltage switchgear.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

• Ability to lift parts weighing up to 100 pounds, climb, stand, crouch, kneel or sit for extended periods of time.
• Ability to work in underground structures and other confined spaces.
• Ability to work on elevated surfaces.
• Ability to detect and recognize odors; focus on small and/or distant objects.
• Frequent exposure to dangerous equipment, loud noise levels, extreme temperatures, vibrations, dirty and wet conditions.

SUPERVISION:

Work is performed under the general direction of a supervisor or Water/Sewer Mechanic. Work assignments are given in the form of work orders or verbal instructions, with the employee responsible for completing the work according to City work rules and safety regulations. Work is reviewed through ongoing observation, written and verbal communications, meetings and feedback from the supervisor and from other department employees. Guidance is provided through rules and regulations, policies and procedures, Unified Work Rules, Union Contract, Personnel Rules and OSHA. Additional guidance is provided through the Illinois EPA. Work is evaluated at least annually for the safe and skilled operation of equipment, quality of tasks, adherence to work rules, and performance in accordance with classification standard.

PUBLIC CONTACT:

The employee has very little public contact; the employee has regular contact with other City employees in order to accomplish work tasks.
