Description

This position is responsible for the development, maintenance, and management of university web services functions. Depending upon the applicable level of the successful candidate, this position may be entry-, mid-, or senior level. Final title, salary grade, and salary will depend upon the successful candidate's education and experience.

Entry-level candidates will work under the supervision of senior team members to assist with development, maintenance, and management of university websites while performing web design, coding, and testing tasks to gain hands-on experience and expand their technical skillset.

Mid-level candidates will work with a team of professionals to develop, manage, and maintain university websites and environments through the performance of web design, development, deployment, and maintenance activities.

Senior-level candidates will involve leading projects, collaborating with key stakeholders, and ensuring that all digital communication aligns with the university's strategic goals. This position serves as a primary expert in web technologies, guiding the implementation of best practices, and driving innovation in digital projects.

Final title, salary grade, and salary will depend upon the successful candidate's education and experience. This position is on site. The selected candidate will be required to be on campus. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

Essential Job Duties

Entry-Level

  • Assist in designing, creating, modifying, and maintaining university-affiliated web pages;
  • Collaborate with senior developers and stakeholders to implement website features and updates;
  • Perform basic coding tasks using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to enhance user experience;
  • Conduct testing and debugging of web applications across various browsers and devices;
  • Assist in content management system (CMS) tasks, including content updates and minor configuration changes;
  • Provide basic support and training to users on CMS usage and website best practices;
  • Keep up to date regarding basic web development trends and best practices;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Mid-Level

  • Design, create, modify, and maintain university-affiliated web pages;
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to create websites, applications, and services for internal and external audiences;
  • Develop, test, and debug web applications in various browsers and devices;
  • Enhance and modify applications, as necessary, to ensure optimal user experiences;
  • Assist in the management of the CMS and serve as an expert resource for key stakeholders;
  • Provide the university community with training on CMS usage and website best practices;
  • Provide customer service to ensure digital content and communication efforts meet university standards;
  • Serve as a source of expertise regarding new and existing web-related projects;
  • Ensure web-based content meets or exceeds accessibility guidelines;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Senior Level

  • Lead the design, creation, modifications, and maintenance of complex university-affiliated websites and applications;
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to execute digital strategies that meet institutional goals;
  • Coordinate development and testing of web applications, ensuring optimization for various browsers/devices;
  • Support the management and customization of the University's CMS;
  • Provide advanced training and support to team members and stakeholders regarding CMS usage and web development best practices;
  • Ensure all web-based content complies with current and ongoing accessibility standards and best practices;
  • Mentor and guide junior developers;
  • Stay ahead of emerging web development trends and technologies, implementing innovative solutions that enhance user experience and site performance;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for improving web projects;
  • Continuously develop technical skills through training and hands-on experience.

Mid-Level

Maintain and enhance knowledge of trends, standards, and best practices related to web-based programming languages and online communications.

  • Represent the web development team in cross-departmental meetings and initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry-Level

  • High School diploma/equivalent is required;
  • Some related college-level coursework is preferred;
  • Basic knowledge of HTML5, CSS, PHP, MySQL, jQuery, and JavaScript is preferred;
  • Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress or similar platforms is preferred;

Mid-Level

  • High School diploma/equivalent is required;
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred;
  • Minimum of two years of related work experience is required;
  • Proficiency with HTML5 and CSS is required;
  • Working experience of jQuery, JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL is required;
  • Some experience with XML and XSLT is preferred;
  • Experience developing in/for enterprise-level CMS such as WordPress is preferred;

Senior Level

  • Minimum of five years of experience in web development or related field, with a focus or leading digital projects is required;
  • Advanced proficiency in HTML5, CSS, PHP, MySQL, jQuery, and JavaScript is required;
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a related field is preferred;
  • Experience in related technologies is preferred;
  • Extensive experience with CMS, particularly in higher education or enterprise environments is preferred;
  • Experience mentoring junior developers is preferred.

Dental Insurance

UNA also provides dental coverage through Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama. The University covers the full individual premium for eligible employees.

Life Insurance

UNA provides all eligible employees with basic life insurance at no cost to the employee. The basic life coverage level is 1.5 times the covered employees annual base salary with a maximum benefit of $400,000. Included with your basic life coverage is Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage at 3 times the covered employee's annual salary. The provider for this coverage is Symetra. As a member of the Teachers Retirement System of Alabama (TRS), eligible employees have life benefits available through the TRS. Also, for eligible active employees, a death benefit of the payment of accrued sick leave is paid to the employees beneficiary by the University.

Long-Term Disability Insurance

This coverage provides benefits after a 90-day period of disability. The monthly benefit is 60% of the covered employee's monthly base salary not to exceed $10,000 per month. The cost for this benefit is paid in full by the University for eligible employees and the provider for this coverage is Symetra.

Retirement Plans

The Teachers' Retirement System of Alabama (TRS) is a defined benefit plan in which participation is mandatory for eligible employees. Eligible employees are categorized by the TRS as Tier I or Tier II members.

Rates below are effective as of October 1, 2025

  • Tier I - Employee contribution rate is 7.5% for regular employees and 8.5% for law enforcement employees.
  • Tier II - Employee contribution rate is 6.2% for regular employees and 7.0% for law enforcement employees.

Voluntary TIAA-Cref 403(b) Plan - this retirement plan is a voluntary, supplemental, deferred compensation plan.

Voluntary RSA-1 457 Plan - this plan is a voluntary, supplemental, deferred compensation plan offered by the Retirement Systems of Alabama.

Supplemental (Voluntary) Benefits

The University provide a $6.00 per month credit to eligible employees to offset the cost(s) for supplemental, voluntary benefits. All full-time regular employees are eligible for this benefit on the first day of the month following the completion of 90 days of employment.

Remission of Tuition and Fees

UNA provides remission of tuition to eligible employees and to their spouses and qualified dependent children.

Paid Time Off

Annual Leave - Annual leave is accrued for each hour worked. During the first 2 years of employment, the accrual is 10 workdays. After completion of 2 years of continuous service, eligible employees are entitled to 12 days of annual leave and, for each additional year of service, annual leave is increased by one day per year to a maximum of 20 days after 10 years.

Sick Leave - Full-time regular staff members are entitled to 96 work hours (12 workdays) of sick leave each year at the employees regular rate of pay regardless of length of service.

Paid Holidays - Full-time, regular staff employees are eligible for paid holidays.
