Job Summary

This is a part-time, benefited position located at Palomar Observatory. The position works under the supervision of the Facilities and Maintenance group supervisor. Position will work alone on weekends (Saturday to Monday) to perform janitorial and other maintenance and cleaning services at Palomar Observatory. Duties include, but are not limited to, cleaning and maintenance of observatory buildings, assisting others in grounds maintenance, snow/ice removal, and general janitorial duties. The position is expected to communicate effectively with the observatory's management, staff, and the general public.

Essential Job Duties

• Clean and maintain floors, restrooms, and public areas. Conduct general janitorial duties at the observatory, which require lifting equipment more than 50 lbs. and driving observatory vehicles to various sites across the observatory. (50%)
• Assist staff as assigned in grounds maintenance and snow/ice removal. (20%)
• Non-hazardous waste collection and management. (10%)
• Open and close the public visitor facilities. (10%)
• Assist with mirror cleaning and coating. (5%)
• Other duties as assigned. (5%)

Basic Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Must have a valid driver's license, and maintain it throughout the course of employment
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs. of facility maintenance equipment, tools, and supplies.
• Must be able to work outside in inclement weather, in confined and/or elevated spaces, at an elevation of 6000'.
• Must be able to safely use basic tools.
• Successful completion of a background check and physical exam.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2 or more years of experience with industrial cleaning techniques.
• Able to safely operate power cleaning equipment such as scrubbers, polishers, and carpet cleaners.
