Weld Quality Assurance Specialist — Structural Fabrication

Location: Harvey, IL
Type: Contract
Shift: 1st or 2nd (flexible)

A day in the life

You step onto the shop floor and into a world of large, complex weldments. With a fillet gauge in your pocket and a blueprint in hand, you work shoulder-to-shoulder with production—spotting undercut, measuring reinforcement, confirming dimensions, and ensuring every joint aligns with AWS D1.1 requirements. You document what you see, flag what must change, and help drive corrective action before issues become costly problems.

What you’ll do

  • Inspect heavy fabrication and structural steel assemblies, verifying weld integrity to AWS D1.1.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and weld symbols to confirm specs and tolerances.
  • Identify weld defects visually and with gauges; escalate and collaborate on fixes in real time.
  • Use and maintain inspection tools: fillet gauges, V-WAC gauges, calipers, micrometers, and thread gauges.
  • Document findings clearly; create inspection reports and track nonconformances.
  • Initiate and support corrective actions with production, quality, and leadership.

What you bring

  • Hands-on weld inspection experience in a heavy fabrication/structural steel setting.
  • Fluency in blueprint reading and weld symbol interpretation.
  • Comfort with standard and metric measurements.
  • Proficiency with precision inspection tools (calipers, micrometers, weld gauges, etc.).

Bonus points

  • CWI or NDT background.
  • Exposure to PFMEA, PPAP, and APQP methodologies.
  • Understanding of GD&T and strong documentation skills.
  • Experience on large, complex weldments; clear, concise floor communication.
  • Welding/fabrication pros looking to advance in inspection—detail-driven but efficient.
