REPORTS TO: Lead Welder
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
SUMMARY: Welder Assistant supports welders by preparing materials, maintaining equipment, handling tools, and assisting with workpiece positioning and shop tasks. This role helps ensure the welding team works efficiently, safely, and with high-quality output.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist welders with setup, material preparation, and workpiece alignment.
Move, lift, and hold parts in place for welding or fitting operations.
Clean and prepare metal surfaces using grinders, wire wheels, and other tools.
Perform basic cutting, deburring, and material handling tasks.
Keep tools, welding equipment, and work areas clean and organized.
Retrieve materials, consumables, and tools needed for ongoing jobs.
Assist in fitting components before welding.
Help maintain a safe working environment.
Support general shop tasks such as sweeping, organizing, and staging materials for upcoming jobs.
Perform other duties as assigned by welders or supervisors
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
HS Diploma, GED or equivalent.
Prior shop / fabrication experience preferred
SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Basic knowledge of hand tools, grinders, and shop equipment.
Basic mechanical aptitude.
Ability to follow instructions and work safely around welding operations.
Comfortable lifting up to 50 lbs. and working on feet for long periods of time.
Willingness to learn welding and fitting skills.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
