Do you want to take responsibility and make a difference with your work? With your expertise, we can achieve great goals together. We are WACKER - Reliable. Determined. Ambitious. As one of the world's most research-intensive chemical companies, we've been making countless products that are an integral part of your everyday life possible for over 100 years. From vegan food to resource-efficient buildings to solar cells, we develop sustainable solutions that change the future.

To strengthen our team in Charleston,

we are looking for you as a(n) Welder.

This Welder role supports the Central Maintenance Shop by collaborating with Engineering and the Mechanical Integrity (MI) team on inspection-driven repair scopes. This role is responsible for the fabrication, assembly, and repair of piping systems, vessels, and structural components that directly support safe and reliable plant operations and plays a critical part in minimizing contractor reliance by executing welding scopes internally, ensuring cost-effective and timely responses to both planned and emergency maintenance needs.

The position requires advanced welding expertise, the ability to adapt to "found work" identified during equipment teardown, and a commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement. By upholding high standards of workmanship and compliance, the Shop Welder ensures that plant systems remain operational, efficient, and aligned with regulatory requirements all per all applicable ASME, NBIC, ASTM, and AWS codes and specifications.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Executes weld scopes from fitting to final testing, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes and specifications.
  • Performs fabrication, assembly, and repair of pipe components and systems using industrial fabrication and rigging equipment.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to determine job specifications and welding requirements.
  • Prepares working materials by clamping, cutting, or applying chemical solutions; inspects and maintains supplies, equipment, and tools.
  • Examines completed welds to ensure they are free of defects, smooth, and functional; documents work performed
  • Observes and enforces safety regulations; collaborates with team members to complete projects on time and within budget.
  • Supports continuous improvement by assisting in developing work instructions, suggesting process enhancements, and mentoring junior team members.
  • Maintains proficiency with Shop PQRs (3G/6G carbon/stainless at present, will increase with Shop capabilities)

Qualifications Required:

  • HS diploma required; Associate degree, Journeyman, or technical certificate (CWI) from a qualified welding / machining vocational school are preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience working in the fabrication/welding field; pipe/tube welding is preferred
  • Must demonstrate the ability to pass 6G weld certification, either carbon or stainless
  • Possess a working understanding of all pertinent ASMF, NBIC, ASTM, and AWS codes and specifications
  • Proficient utilizing weld procedures (including weld maps, WPS requirements, and ISO's as necessary) for work orders to be executed by the Weld Shop as provided by Mechanical Integrity, QA, and Engineering
  • Demonstrates proficiency operating and the safe use of industrial fabrication shop equipment (including, but not limited to light machining, brakes, ironworkers, pipe-beveling equipment, and others as required)
  • Proficient in principals and execution of rigging (critical/large lifts) inside C316
  • Knowledge of shop safety protocols and mechanical integrity inspection practices to ensure welds and fabricated components meet code and operational requirements.
  • Physical stamina and dexterity to work in various positions and environments (standing, bending, confined spaces)
  • Proficient in operating and safely using industrial fabrication shop equipment (light machining, brakes, ironworkers, pipe-beveling equipment, grinders, torches, plasma cutters, etc.).
