Description
A well-established structural steel fabrication company is seeking an experienced Structural Steel Fitter / Fabricator to join its team in Carrollton, TX.
The Fitter will be responsible for interpreting structural steel drawings, measuring and marking materials, and accurately fitting and assembling steel components according to project specifications and required tolerances. This position works closely with welders, machine operators, supervisors, and other fabrication professionals to ensure projects are completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on structural steel fitting experience, strong blueprint-reading skills, excellent attention to detail, and a strong commitment to workplace safety and quality.
Job Responsibilities
Read and interpret structural steel drawings, blueprints, fabrication drawings, and shop details.
Measure, mark, cut, align, and fit structural steel components according to specifications.
Fit and assemble beams, columns, plates, and other structural steel components.
Prepare materials and assemblies for welding.
Verify dimensions, alignment, squareness, and tolerances using appropriate measuring tools and gauges.
Work closely with welders to ensure properly fitted assemblies are ready for welding.
Utilize common fabrication processes and equipment, including:
Sawing
Burning
Drilling
Punching
Coping
Basic welding
Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment.
Follow established shop safety procedures and properly use required PPE.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
Identify dimensional or fitting issues and communicate them to supervisors or appropriate team members.
Work efficiently to meet production schedules and project deadlines.
Maintain high standards of workmanship and quality throughout the fabrication process.
Collaborate with supervisors, welders, machine operators, and other team members.
Support continuous improvement of fabrication processes and shop operations.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Ability to read and interpret structural steel drawings, blueprints, and shop details.
Strong understanding of measurements, layout, dimensions, and basic math.
Hands-on ability to fit structural steel components, including measuring, cutting, aligning, and preparing materials for welding.
Familiarity with structural steel fabrication processes such as sawing, burning, drilling, punching, and coping.
Knowledge of basic welding practices.
Knowledge of shop safety procedures and proper PPE usage.
Ability to safely operate hand and power tools.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Ability to verify dimensions, alignment, and specified tolerances consistently.
Ability to lift and move steel materials and work safely in a production environment.
Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding shop work.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to work effectively with supervisors, welders, machine operators, and other fabrication personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience in structural steel fabrication or fitting.
Vocational training in metal fabrication, welding, or a related trade.
Industry-recognized metal fabrication or welding certification.
Experience working in a commercial or industrial structural steel fabrication environment.
