Job DetailsThe Welder keeps the plant's melting, casting and scrap-processing operations running by fabricating, repairing and maintaining plant equipment. The work covers furnace and ladle components, casting tables and molds, conveyors, scrap bins, chutes and structural steel, in both steel and aluminum. This is a hands-on role in an active foundry where safety, quality and fast turnaround on breakdowns matter every shift.
Key Responsibilities
- Weld, cut and fabricate steel, stainless and aluminum components using SMAW (stick), GMAW (MIG), FCAW (flux-core) and GTAW (TIG).
- Repair and rebuild furnace doors, ladles, launders, skim tools, casting tables, molds and dross-handling equipment.
- Fabricate and repair scrap bins, hoppers, chutes, guards, platforms, handrails and structural supports.
- Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings and weld symbols; take field measurements and lay out work.
- Use oxy-fuel and plasma cutting, carbon-arc gouging, grinders, drill presses, saws and benders.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns quickly to minimize production downtime.
- Support preventive maintenance and work alongside mechanics and electricians on plant projects.
- Inspect welds for quality and correct defects; keep work to drawing tolerances and company standards.
- Follow hot-work permits, lockout/tagout, confined-space and fall-protection procedures.
- Keep tools, welding equipment and work areas clean and organized; record work in the maintenance system.
- Take part in continuous improvement and ISO 9001 quality practices.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- 3+ years of welding and fabrication experience in an industrial, manufacturing or foundry setting.
- Proficiency in SMAW, GMAW and FCAW on carbon steel in all positions.
- Ability to read blueprints and weld symbols and use measuring tools accurately.
- Working knowledge of torch and plasma cutting and carbon-arc gouging.
- Strong safety mindset and willingness to follow hot-work and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, overtime, weekends and on-call for breakdowns.
Preferred
- AWS D1.1 (structural steel) certification; AWS D1.2 (aluminum) a plus.
- GTAW experience on aluminum and stainless steel.
- Experience in aluminum melting, casting, metal recycling or another heavy-industrial plant.
- Basic mechanical maintenance skills (rigging, hydraulics, pneumatics).
- Forklift and overhead-crane experience or certification.
- Bilingual English/Spanish.
