Description of Work

This position is assigned to the Elkin Bridge Maintenance Unit in Surry County. Employees in this class perform operation of acetylene and electric arc welding equipment in the repair and replacement of structures. Employee must be proficient in the use of a welder and a cutting torch. Will have to fabricate bridge components such as caps, bearing plates, diaphragms, post blocks and rail components.

Required to read and interpret detailed blueprints and bridge plans. Knowledgeable about how skews, grades and super elevations affect fabrication. Will be required to cut and fit steel to very close tolerances for repairing steel I-beams, piles to proper lengths and caps to proper heights. Will perform basic carpentry work, pouring and finishing concrete, tying reinforcing steel and setting I-beams. Work assignments are received from a Bridge Supervisor or Bridge Maintenance Engineer to include general instructions regarding the welding needed. Employee performs lay outs, cuts and fits material for welding. Possess a working knowledge of the heating properties of a variety of alloys and parent metals. Ability to effectively operate tools and equipment of the welding trade. Follow blueprints, drawings and oral/written instructions. Possess physical strength and ability sufficient to move relatively heavy objects and to perform manual labor tasks for short periods of time. Ability to work extended hours in all weather and terrain conditions. Operate State vehicle. Promote safe working environment.

The employee in this position examines parent metals and alloys in order to determine the strength and heating properties and determines the amount of heat to be applied. This position operates acetylene and electric arc welding equipment to permanently fuse structural elements during repairs. Additional duties include assembling and disassembling steel elements to be repaired or replaced on bridges. The successful applicant will design and fabricate without blueprints, drawings and instructions. This position may require overnight travel. Must be able to perform related duties as required. Also, the successful applicant will be expected to perform Transportation (Bridge) Worker classification duties as required when welding duties are not needed.

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC09 / $41,206 - $72,113

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Working knowledge of the principles and methods of oxygen/acetylene cutting and electric ARC, MIG, and TIG welding
  • Demonstrated ability to layout, cut and fit material for welding
  • Experience performing a variety of welding and cutting tasks (that includes the repair, modification, maintenance, and fabrication)
  • Experience dismantling and reassembling parts welded
  • Demonstrated ability working from and following oral and written directions and drawings, and copying or reproducing items which have been broken

High school or General Educational Development diploma (GED) diploma and two years of progressive experience in acetylene or electric arc welding; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
