The Prototype Fabrication (PF) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory has experience and expertise in machining, fabrication and precision dimensional inspection of critical hardware needed to support the nation's stockpile readiness efforts. The Manufacturing (MFG) Group is seeking a qualified welding engineering technologist to join the team! This position will provide vital support for critical areas of operations. The responsibilities of this position cover a broad range of transactional activities that are crucial for manufacturing accountability, security, shipping, tracking, quality, and successful delivery of products to a broad customer base.

As a welding engineering technologist/planner/inspector, you will earn and maintain a CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) credential from AWS. You will serve as a subject matter expert in welding and in non-welding fabrication techniques such as laser cutting and CNC press brake operations. You will be responsible for new product review, integration, and process development on the manufacturing shop floor. You will perform hands-on welding and fabrication to qualify new processes and fulfill prototype orders. You will review customer drawings, provide advice on manufacturability, write manufacturing instructions, and estimate lead times. You will train colleagues in fabrication-related skills and inspect the results of their work. You will provide technical leadership to keep PF Division's welding operations in compliance with LANL welding requirements. The successful candidate will work directly with machinists, inspectors, welders, engineers, planners, schedulers, management, and customers in support of daily operations for the division.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Manufacturing Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience taking and passing a formal Welder Qualification Test (WQT) in TIG welding.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and interpret welding symbols per AWS A2.4.
  • Ability to determine whether drawing requirements can or cannot be achieved with current shop capabilities; ability to conceive and propose alternatives for those requirements which cannot be achieved.
  • Experience with, or willingness to learn, sheet metal forming operations including slip rolls and CNC press brakes
  • Ability to plan a successful sequence of operations for the manufacture of parts or assemblies involving welding and/or sheet metal forming.
  • Willingness to operate forklifts and cranes in a manner that complies with LANL policy

Estimating
  • Ability to provide accurate quotes for work requests including machine time, labor, material, and third party process cost.
  • Ability to coordinate the delivery and transfer of finished products on and offsite for a broad customer base.
  • Inventory Management/Organizational Skills
  • Experience with detailed record keeping and organization, e.g. inventory, records, production schedules and materials logs.
  • High attention to detail with accuracy and strong organizational skills.
  • Computing/Business Systems and Software
  • Proficiency with typical business software, computer hardware, and use of computer systems, specifically, spreadsheets, procurement systems and inventory databases.

Customer Service
  • A record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to the long-term needs of the job duties and programmatic goals of the organization.
  • Ability to successfully negotiate technical specifications with customers

Communication
  • Strong written and spoken English communication skills
  • Ability to write professional emails for a variety of audiences (technician, engineer, manager)
  • Ability to write work instructions and training outlines
  • Ability to redline mechanical drawings with proposed revisions


Training/Certifications: You must have the ability to acquire and maintain pertinent credentials including DOE Q Clearance and AWS CWI (Certified Welding Inspector).

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Current CWI credential
  • Experience with CNC press brakes
  • Experience as an industrial trainer
  • Knowledge of LANL specific applications (Solidworks, JobBOSS)
  • Experience with GD&T per ASME Y14.5
  • Experience with precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and indicators
  • Experience with fixture design
  • Familiarity with sheet metal forming operations and planning (K-factors, bend allowance, flat pattern preparation)
  • Previous certification as a forklift operator and/or crane operator
  • Experience interacting with customers
  • Experience with a high level of formality / regulation in the work environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment:Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
