Position Summary

The Welding Instructor is responsible for the planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities. They will provide competent classroom and laboratory instruction in the area of credentialed expertise. The Instructor will adhere to the general faculty guidelines as specified by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the Drake State Community and Technical College Faculty and Staff Handbook.

Salary Range $43,792-$98,138(9 months).

Summer contract may be available from $13,521 - $30,351 depending upon enrollment.

Salary step placement is based on education and experience per Drake State's practice for awarding salary step credit.

Work Hours: Classes are taught day, evening, and weekends on the Huntsville campus. In addition, multiple forms of distance education are offered.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Welding Instructor shall perform the duties as specified in conformity with policies established by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College Faculty and Staff Handbook.

  • Deliver high-quality instruction in the assigned discipline through face-to-face, hybrid, online, dual enrollment, and other approved instructional modalities.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve curriculum, instructional strategies, and learning resources to support student achievement and workforce readiness.
  • Create and maintain an engaging, inclusive, student-centered learning environment that promotes academic success, belonging, and professional growth.
  • Communicate course expectations, learning outcomes, attendance requirements, grading procedures, and academic progress clearly and consistently.
  • Assess student learning using a variety of instructional and assessment methods and utilize assessment results to improve teaching effectiveness and student outcomes.
  • Prepare, administer, and evaluate assignments, projects, laboratory activities, examinations, and other learning assessments in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records related to instruction, attendance, grades, student progress, early alerts, and other required reporting systems.
  • Utilize the Colleges Learning Management System (LMS) and other approved educational technologies to enhance teaching, communication, student engagement, and learning outcomes.
  • Monitor student performance and provide appropriate intervention, referrals, mentoring, tutoring, academic advising, and support services to promote retention and completion.
  • Support student recruitment, onboarding, registration, orientation, retention, completion, transfer, and job-placement initiatives as needed.
  • Maintain regular availability and accessible communication with students, colleagues, and other stakeholders through established office hours and approved communication channels.
  • Participate in program review, strategic planning, assessment activities, accreditation efforts, and institutional effectiveness processes.
  • Collect, maintain, and submit required documentation, reports, assessment data, and accreditation evidence in accordance with institutional and program requirements.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, academic departments, workforce partners, K-12 partners, and community stakeholders to support instructional excellence and institutional goals.
  • Participate in curriculum development, program improvement, and alignment of academic programs with industry standards, workforce needs, and transfer pathways.
  • Serve on college committees, task forces, advisory boards, governance groups, and other institutional initiatives as assigned.
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain currency in instructional practices, emerging technologies, industry trends, certifications, licensure requirements, and subject-matter expertise.
  • Support the Colleges commitment to student success, diversity, equity, inclusion, workforce development, community engagement, and continuous improvement.
  • Teach courses at approved times and locations, including day, evening, weekend, off-campus, dual enrollment, hybrid, online, and other formats as needed to meet institutional and student demand.
  • Maintain accountability for assigned equipment, materials, laboratories, instructional resources, and campus facilities.
  • Attend and actively participate in faculty meetings, college assemblies, commencement exercises, professional development activities, orientation programs, and other meetings required by the College.
  • Contribute to co-curricular, extracurricular, and community engagement activities that support the mission and goals of the College.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, collegiality, and compliance with all institutional, accreditation, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Report to work regularly and punctually and complete all required personnel and administrative processes in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Division Chair, Associate Dean of Instruction, Dean of Instruction, and/or the President

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of an Associate's degree or at least sixty (60) semester hours leading to an Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Specialized coursework equivalent to the community or technical college program
  • Three (3) years of full-time welding work experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior teaching experience
  • Excellent oral, auditory, and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, other employees, and the public
  • Ability to project a professional and congenial demeanor

Sick Leave

All regular full-time instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is equivalent to 7 hours per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers Retirement System of Alabama.

PEEHIP, established in 1983, provides health insurance benefits for active and retired education employees and is governed by the PEEHIP Board of Control. Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:

1/3 waived after 1st year

2/3 waived after 2nd year

3/3 waived after 3rd year
