Position Summary

The Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction to students with significant academic and/or emotional needs within a self-contained setting. A core priority of this role is the proactive pursuit of the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE); the teacher will utilize data-driven decision-making and inclusive practices to identify and facilitate opportunities for students to transition into general education settings. Central to this position is the implementation of individualized academic goals and social-emotional supports to ensure robust progress as outlined in each student's IEP.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • IEP Management: Act as the Teacher of Record (TOR). Develop, write, and implement IEPs, including measurable goals, accommodations, and transition plans. Lead Case Conference Committee (CCC) meetings.
  • Differentiated Instruction: Modify the general education curriculum to meet the functional and academic levels of students. Use evidence-based practices (e.g., ABA, Task Analysis) to teach core subjects and adaptive/functional skills.
  • Behavioral Support: Develop and implement Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). Use de-escalation techniques and positive behavioral interventions to maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Classroom Leadership: Supervise and train Paraprofessionals/Aides to ensure they are effectively supporting student goals and following safety protocols.
  • Data Collection: Maintain rigorous data on student progress toward IEP goals to inform instructional decisions and reporting.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with related service providers (OT, PT, SLP) to integrate therapy goals into the daily classroom routine.
  • The teacher will actively promote student progress toward the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), identifying opportunities for students to transition into general education settings through inclusive practices and data-driven decision-making.

  • Classroom Management and Learning Environment:
  • Create and maintain a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment that is conducive to the diverse needs of all students.
  • Implement effective classroom management strategies to promote student engagement and minimize disruptions.
  • Organize and manage classroom resources and materials effectively.
  • Utilize assistive technology and other tools to enhance student learning and access.
  • Professional Development and Compliance:
  • Stay current with best practices in special education through professional development opportunities, workshops, and conferences.
  • Adhere to all federal and state regulations, as well as school district policies and procedures related to special education.
  • Maintain accurate and organized student records and documentation.
  • Complete required reports and paperwork in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Special Education or enrolled in a transition to teaching program.
  • Valid Indiana Special Education teaching license. Candidates with pending licensure may be considered.
  • Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Experience developing and implementing IEPs.
  • Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction and adapt curriculum to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Strong classroom management skills and the ability to implement positive behavior support strategies.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in using technology for instruction, assessment, and communication.
  • Current CPR, Heimlich Maneuver, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Completion of Child Suicide Awareness and Prevention training (or willingness to obtain).
  • Certification in district-approved de-escalation/restraint training, e.g., CPI (or willingness to obtain).
  • Successful completion of background checks and fingerprinting as required by Indiana law.
