The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 1 located in Juneau, Alaska!

What you will be doing:

Under general supervision of the Marine Mammal Program and TED Coordinators, the LTNP performs a variety of mission critical office tasks to address issues on species that are listed or candidate species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and/or are under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). The incumbent, after initial training, will work independently to prepare presentation material on the ESA, MMP, and species of interest, review species related documents, maintain an ESA calendar action list, reviews and summarize species specific literature, maintain notes from ESA meetings, to achieve Division of Wildlife goals. This position will also be responsible for updating the ESA website and archiving a significant backlog in ESA documents. This position must excel in the use of computers and software for the construction of MS Word documents with excellent writing skills, MS Excel for action items, MS Teams for calendar of events and sharing of materials, MS PowerPoint for presentations, peer reviewed and federal agency literature searches, and technical report construction. Performs additional duties as assigned. The position may assist in field work as needed, but this is not a significant component of the work.

The working environment you can expect:

This position will be based in either the Juneau or Douglas office in the Division of Wildlife Conservation offices. Individual office space (cubical) will be provided. The work is primarily in office duties.

Who we are looking for:

Competencies include attention to detail, commitment to complete projects, computer skills (i.e., proficiency in MS Office Suite), eye-hand coordination, positive communication and interpersonal skills, stamina (ability to work long periods on data entry), visual identification (e.g., image analysis to count animals), and strong English writing skills. Desired experience includes a background or education in biological sciences, solid understanding of the Endangered Species Act and/or the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and experience in scientific writing.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelors degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.

Substitution:

A bachelors degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

  • at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
  • at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

Special Note:

"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a disciplines theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelors degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
