The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is adding a Wildlife Field Technician to support avian and bat fatality monitoring at an operational wind facility near The Dalles, Oregon. This role involves implementing post-construction monitoring programs, including fatality searches and carcass persistence trials, while adhering to standardized protocols and maintaining detailed data records.

This is a part-time, field-based position requiring approximately 24 hours per week, typically structured as 9-10 hour field days per month, with additional fieldwork opportunities available. A one-year commitment is required, with potential to extend for up to two additional years.

Project Schedule & Logistics:

  • Fieldwork begins May 2025 through May 2026, with potential extension through May 2029
  • Average of 3 full field days per week (varies based on schedule)
  • Travel to/from field site required
  • Company vehicle and gas provided for work-related travel
  • Technicians are responsible for their own housing
  • $400/month stipend (first 6 months) for candidates living within 50 miles of the project area

Essential Job Functions:

  • Conduct avian and bat fatality monitoring surveys following standardized protocols
  • Perform carcass searches and persistence trials
  • Accurately collect, record, and manage field data
  • Identify birds and bats, including raptors and regional species
  • Work independently or in small crews while maintaining communication with supervisors and site teams
  • Follow all site-specific and Tetra Tech safety protocols
  • Utilize GPS units, maps, and field equipment to support survey activities
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Prior field experience with birds and/or bats preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Biology, or related field preferred (not required)
  • Experience with transect-based surveys preferred
  • Ability to identify eagles, raptors, and regional bird/bat species
  • Experience with GPS units, topographic maps, and field data collection tools
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail
  • Experience with 4x4 vehicles preferred
  • Willingness to work in remote environments and variable weather conditions
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

  • Ability to walk long distances and work in challenging field conditions
  • Comfortable working around bird and bat carcasses
  • Ability to follow instructions and maintain accurate and timely data submission
  • Positive attitude and openness to feedback

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

  • Ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting/carrying objects up to 35 lbs.
  • Ability to walk up to 6 miles daily on uneven terrain
  • Work conducted in outdoor environments, including exposure to weather extremes and varying terrain

Compensation:

Pay commensurate with experience.

Pay Range: $20.00-$25.00 hourly
