What We Can Achieve Together:

The Wind River Youth Fire Crew Member participates in a fire, forestry, and fuels crew trained to perform wildfire suppression, fuels reduction, prescribed and cultural burning, and post fire restoration on Bridger-Teton National Forest. Crew members will work as a team, in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, and under physically demanding circumstances on difficult terrain, while building experience in conservation and natural resource protection.

Responsibilities & Scope:

  • Uses chainsaws and other tools to reduce hazardous vegetation, create fuel breaks, build trails, and restore habitat.
  • Surveys, collects data, and monitors vegetation and wildlife before and after fires.
  • Participates in crew tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and meal planning, while living in communal, remote conditions.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • May require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.

What You'll Bring:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects and perform strenuous labor for extended hours.
  • Currently certified or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire:
    • S-130: Firefighter Training
    • S-190: Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior
    • S212: Wildfire Saw Qualification
    • First aid and CPR
    • Field pack test
  • The use of alcohol and recreational drugs is prohibited any time while on assignment to maintain a healthy, communal atmosphere and build trust among the partners and communities where we work.
  • The Wind River Youth Fire Crew Member will be based out of Jackson, WY. Crew Members will be expected to travel to various project locations across Bridger-Teton National Forest. Housing and vehicle are provided. Camping in remote locations may be necessary on occasion. Start date for will be June 15, 2026 and end date will be August 28, 2026.

  • Ability to obtain a driver's license and maintain a good driving record.
  • Passion for the outdoors and interest in natural resource protection.
Salary Information:

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $17.20 - $19.29 hourly rate. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
