Wireless Telecommunications Design Project Lead

Location: Portland, OR

Position Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Wireless Telecommunications Design Project Lead to join their growing telecommunications engineering team in Portland, Oregon. This is an exciting contract-to-hire opportunity for a technical leader with extensive experience designing wireless communication systems for mission-critical facilities, commercial buildings, and complex infrastructure projects.

The Project Lead will be responsible for managing multiple design projects while providing technical leadership throughout the entire project lifecycle. This position works closely with engineers, BIM designers, clients, vendors, and regulatory agencies to deliver high-quality wireless communication system designs on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead wireless telecommunications projects from initial concept through final design and delivery.
  • Perform preliminary assessments and develop system concepts based on client requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to design teams, BIM designers, and project stakeholders.
  • Design wireless communication systems using iBwave, EDX, and related RF modeling software.
  • Coordinate with BIM designers to develop complete drawing packages.
  • Prepare and modify Division 27 telecommunications specifications.
  • Coordinate with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), radio system owners, wireless carriers, and other stakeholders.
  • Conduct site visits and field investigations as required.
  • Review technical documents, calculations, and design packages for quality and accuracy.
  • Resolve technical issues with internal teams, clients, vendors, and field personnel.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, risks, and deliverables.
  • Support proposal development and respond to Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Ensure projects are completed on time while maintaining high quality standards.

Technical Responsibilities

Design and provide technical leadership for wireless communication systems including:

  • Commercial Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS)
  • Public Safety DAS
  • Land Mobile Radio (LMR)
  • Site Radio Systems
  • Radio over IP (RoIP)
  • Wi-Fi Systems
  • Tower Studies
  • Wireless coverage modeling and optimization

Required Qualifications

  • Technical degree or Associate's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience designing wireless telecommunications systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience using iBwave, EDX, Atoll, LMR Planner, or a combination of RF design tools.
  • iBwave Level 2 Certification.
  • Experience designing:
    • Public Safety DAS
    • Commercial DAS
    • OTA DAS
    • Neutral Host DAS
    • DRAN DAS
    • LMR two-way radio systems
    • Outdoor LMR
    • Site Radio
    • RoIP systems
  • Experience working directly with clients to identify wireless communication requirements.
  • Experience supporting field teams with troubleshooting wireless communication systems.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Noise Floor
    • SNIR
    • Return Loss
    • VSWR
  • Experience optimizing wireless networks during design and installation.
  • Familiarity with Navisworks.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Experience preparing project budgets and schedules.
  • Experience identifying and mitigating project risks.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills across multidisciplinary teams.

  • NFPA 1221

  • IFC Section 510
  • International Building Code (IBC)
  • FCC Part 20 and Part 90
  • FCC OET Bulletin 65
  • Carrier KPIs
  • Client MOTOTRBO systems
  • Client R56 Installation Standards
  • DMR Tier III

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing enterprise Wi-Fi systems.
  • EDX or Client design certifications.
  • FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL).
  • NICET Design Certification.
  • Multiple OEM wireless product certifications.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Communications Engineering.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
