District Primary Purpose:
To assist and promote La Joya ISD in implementing rigorous Career and Technical Education experiences that support student success, career readiness, and workforce development.
Department Primary Purpose:
To provide students with meaningful work-based learning experiences that develop technical skills, employability skills, workplace readiness, and career awareness aligned to approved Career and Technical Education Programs of Study.
Qualifications
Required:
- Current La Joya ISD student.
- Minimum age of 14 years old.
- Enrolled in or planning to enroll in a Career and Technical Education Program of Study.
- Successful completion of all Summer Career and Technical Education Grant enrollment requirements.
- Completion of all required Work-Based Learning (WBL) training plans, agreements, and grant documentation.
- Parent/Guardian consent for participation in the Summer CTE Work-Based Learning Program.
- Submission of all employment and payroll documentation required by La Joya ISD Human Capital and Payroll Departments.
- Verification of Social Security documentation and completion of employment eligibility requirements, including Form I-9 and any additional district-required forms.
- Ability to maintain satisfactory attendance, conduct, and academic standing.
- Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors, staff, and peers.
Preferred:
- Participation in the Summer Career and Technical Education Grant Program.
- Interest in pursuing a career aligned to an approved Program of Study.
- Demonstrated responsibility, dependability, and willingness to learn.

Primary Purpose of Position
The Work-Based Learning Student Intern will participate in structured workplace experiences designed to provide hands-on career training aligned to a Career and Technical Education Program of Study. Students will develop technical, academic, and employability skills while applying classroom learning in authentic work environments under the supervision of district staff and workplace mentors.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Participate in structured work-based learning experiences aligned to a Career and Technical Education Program of Study.
- Apply classroom knowledge and technical skills in authentic workplace environments.
- Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, teamwork, communication, and workplace ethics.
- Follow all district policies, workplace expectations, and safety procedures.
- Complete assigned projects, tasks, and work-based learning activities under supervision.
- Maintain accurate work logs, timesheets, training plans, and required documentation.
- Participate in employability skills training and career readiness activities.
- Demonstrate initiative, responsibility, and a positive attitude in the workplace.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while working with district staff, students, and community partners.
- Attend all required meetings, orientations, training sessions, and program activities.
- Comply with all grant requirements and program expectations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the worksite supervisor and Career and Technical Education staff.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
May include standing, walking, lifting light materials, operating technology equipment, and working in office, healthcare, culinary, maintenance, construction, welding, automotive, or information technology environments depending on assignment.
Terms of Employment
- Temporary grant-funded student position funded through the 2025-2026 Summer Career and Technical Education Grant.
- Compensation at $10.00 per hour.
- Up to 30 total work-based learning hours during the Summer 2026 program.
- Students will be assigned to approved district departments and work-based learning sites aligned to their Program of Study.
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all grant enrollment requirements, employment eligibility verification, payroll documentation, and participation requirements established by La Joya ISD and the Texas Education Agency.
- Students must maintain satisfactory attendance, conduct, and performance throughout the duration of the program.
- Employment may be terminated for failure to comply with district policies, workplace expectations, grant requirements, or program participation standards.
Special Note
This position is funded through the 2025-2026 Summer Career and Technical Education Grant, Focus Area 2 - Work-Based Learning Experiences. The purpose of the position is to provide students with paid, supervised work-based learning opportunities that prepare them for high-skill, high-wage, and high-demand careers while supporting successful completion of Career and Technical Education Programs of Study.
