Job Summary:

The Wrong Way and School Zone Sign Technician supports each district with the installation, maintenance, and inspection of traffic control devices, with a primary focus on wrong-way detection systems and school zone safety systems. This position ensures public safety by maintaining clear, visible, and compliant sign age systems in high-risk and sensitive areas. Responsibilities include performing entry-level work related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance of traffic systems, communication networks, illumination, and data collection devices. Work may occur in heavy traffic conditions, require extensive statewide travel, and involve interaction with governmental and private entities. Employees in this role follow specific instructions and complete

assignments under frequent review by an immediate supervisor

Typical Functions

The functions performed in this job family will vary by level, unit and organization, but may include the following:

• Install and maintain wrong-way detection signs and systems on roadways and ramps.
• Set up and service school zone signs, including flashing beacons and speed limit indicators.
• Conduct routine inspections to ensure signs are visible, functional, and compliant with MUTCD standards, ODOT standards, and Manufacturer standards.
• Respond to emergency sign repair requests and traffic safety concerns.
• Collaborate with engineers and field crews to improve traffic safety infrastructure.
• Maintain accurate records of sign locations, maintenance activities, and inventory.
• Assists in inspecting construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors build, install and maintain traffic-related systems/equipment in accordance with plans and specifications and contract requirements.
• Assists in installing, maintaining, modifying, adjusting, testing, troubleshooting, inspecting, and/or repairing electronic traffic control, communication, traffic data collection, and/or illumination systems.
• Assists in installing, troubleshooting and maintaining hardware and software pertaining to traffic systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems or the Statewide Traffic Analysis and Reporting System.
• Assists in maintaining stock and equipment to ensure necessary tools, products and materials are available for scheduled projects.
• Follows applicable safety procedures when working in an area where other utilities such as high voltage lines, gas lines, water and sewage lines and heavy traffic are located.
• Learns to identify, troubleshoot, problem solve and identify possible new site characteristics.
• Learns to install, maintain and replace cameras, motorized LED and fiber optic signs and cable and communication modems; monitors communication devices/systems.
• Moves/assists in the placement of barricades, cones and other traffic control devices.
• Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment.

Level Descriptor

Levels are distinguished based on the complexity of assigned duties, the level of expertise required for completion of work assignments, and the responsibility assigned for the supervision of others.

Incumbents perform entry level technical work in a training status using standardized procedures to assist and/or perform tasks such as surveying, research, planning, highway constructions inspection, data collection, and/or materials sampling and testing. Responsibilities may be assigned in any area of transportation work.

Education and Experience

Level I- Education and Experience requirements are none.

Level II- Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of one year of experience in transportation-related work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting two college courses in mathematics, natural science, engineering, or a closely related field for the required year of experience.

Level Ill- Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of three years of experience in transportation-related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting 30 semester hours for each year of the required experience, including two college courses in mathematics, natural science, engineering, or a closely related field. Preference will be given to applicants with an IMSASignal Technician Certification, Level I.

Level IV- Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of four years of experience in transportation-related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting 30 semester hours for each year of the required experience, including two college courses in mathematics, natural science, engineering, or a closely related field. Preference will be given to applicants with an IMSASignal Technician Certification, Level II.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of basic geometry and algebra; of basic laboratory equipment; of construction materials; and of the English language in order to follow written and oral instructions.

Ability is required to measure distance; to collect data; to operate computer equipment; and to operate transportation-related equipment.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid driver's license in order to perform necessary travel.

Applicants must be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with the position.
