The Yard Jockey Shift Leader makes an impact by -
- Lead and direct jockeys on assigned shift, keeping jockeys on task, assure jockeys are following policies and procedures and lead by example.
- Monitor and support the department on a designated shift to maintain timely moves and department performance.
- Oversee vehicle/jockey truck operations to maintain compliance for all equipment.
- Train new hire jockeys that are assigned to work the shift.
- Work as a jockey on assigned shift. Drive tractor-trailers to designated bay or spot according to needs of warehousing and production in a timely manner.
- Work as a relief capacity, be on call for vacations/call offs for assigned shifts on days off when coverage cannot be acquired.
- Maintain/Oversee temperature gauges to ensure proper temperatures are maintained on loaded trailers.
- Inspect truck for defects before and after trips and notify the Garage department of any mechanical problems.
- Maintain adherence to work hours schedule; specifically, starting time, quitting time, and break times.
- Operate equipment with the highest regard for the integrity of the building structures, equipment function, and employee safety.
- Maintain fuel, oil, and water levels in all units, as assigned.
- Work directly with supervisor on scheduling coverage for shift, daily reports about issues and shift performance, and assist with interviewing potential new hires.
- Point of contact between the DTR Shipping Clerk Office and the Yard Jockeys to resolve any issues in yard or between departments.
- Maintain orderly and clean work environment to ensure employee and consumer safety.

Physical Demands-
The physical requirements for a Department of Transportation (DOT) job, particularly for commercial vehicle drivers, are designed to ensure that drivers are fit to safely operate their vehicles. Here are some key physical requirements:
- General Health: Drivers must be in good overall health, free from medical conditions that could impair their ability to drive safely.
- Vision: Drivers must have at least 20/40 vision in each eye, with or without correction, and a field of vision of at least 70 degrees in the horizontal meridian in each eye. They must also be able to recognize the colors of traffic signals.
- Hearing: Drivers must be able to perceive a forced whisper at a distance of at least 5 feet, with or without a hearing aid.
- Blood Pressure and Pulse: These must be within normal ranges to ensure cardiovascular health.
- Physical Abilities: Drivers must be able to walk, bend, push, pull, twist, squat, and kneel daily.
- Drug and Alcohol Testing: Drivers must pass a pre-employment drug screen and are subject to random testing throughout their employment.
These requirements are part of the DOT physical exam, which is a mandatory health check for commercial drivers to ensure they can handle the physical demands of their job.
- The employee is required to talk and/or hear in a manufacturing setting where noise levels are high (PPE required).
- The employee is required to wear mandated PPE based on assigned job area.
- The employee is frequently required to stand and walk in a manufacturing environment for 8+ hours.
- The employee must be able to ascend and descend stairs, and where applicable and when necessary, to perform various job-related tasks.
- Must be able to position self to move, reach with arms/hands, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as needed to perform various job-related tasks.
- The employee must be able to inspect all job-related equipment (office or floor) to ensure it is in good working condition prior to use. Must be able to use hands/fingers to handle (or feel) to operate various types of office equipment.
- Must be able to operate all job-related equipment (powered, hand or office) as required.
- Vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception and adjust focus.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and/or push/pull 50 pounds on a regular basis.
