Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Yard Switcher, you will safely and efficiently move trailers within the yard to support warehouse operations. Responsibilities include positioning trailers at dock doors, communicating with warehouse staff, conducting routine inspections of yard equipment and trailers, and reporting any safety or maintenance issues immediately. Adherence to all yard safety procedures and company policies is required. Attention to detail and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment are essential.
HOW YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Check with supervisor promptly at the start of the shift for assigned schedule
Review and communicate truck temperature and fuel logs for accuracy and discrepancies
Perform safety inspections of the yard horse and trailer according to DOT regulations
Maintain communication with supervisor on truck rotations via radio or in person
Conduct inspection of all equipment once parked in the bay to ensure they are chocked securely
Move trailers in a safe and accurate manner as requested by the manager
Take reefer container temperature, checks periodically while on shift
Report any issues on the yard such as traffic obstacles or hazards, accidents etc.
Perform general housekeeping duties in work area as needed
Attach trailers to "Yard Tractor" and transport to the appropriate loading dock door
Secure all equipment and completes all necessary paperwork at the end of the shift
QUALIFICATIONS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO US
Previous yard switcher, yard jockey, or tractor-trailer experience preferred
Ability to safely maneuver trailers in tight spaces
Strong understanding of yard safety procedures and safe driving practices
Ability to communicate effectively with warehouse staff and supervisors
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Basic knowledge of vehicle inspections and reporting maintenance issues
Willingness to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Ability to work in all weather conditions
Ability to meet physical demands of the job, including climbing in and out of equipment and prolonged sitting
