Description

Gain hands-on legal experience with Union Pacific Railroad's Law Department while supporting paralegals across labor, employment, personal injury, real estate, regulatory, and transactional matters. The paralegal intern will assist with document review and analysis, fact gathering, legal research, drafting legal documents, and other assigned projects.

The ideal candidate will have completed at least two years of college-level study in Paralegal Studies by the internship start date and will bring strong writing, communication, analytical, and organizational skills.

This position is intended for students who are actively pursuing a degree while attending a college or university within commuting distance of Omaha, Nebraska and are interested in gaining hands-on legal experience within Union Pacifics Law Department. During the academic year, this position offers a flexible schedule averaging 15-20 hours per week. Interns are expected to work primarily onsite at Union Pacific Center in Omaha, Nebraska, with some flexibility for remote work as approved by their manager. Interns are also expected to work full-time in Omaha, Nebraska, during the summer portion of the internship.

The estimated wage for this position is between $21.00-$25.00 per hour. Final rate of pay will be based on several factors including year of study, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

Accountabilities

  • Support paralegals with document review and analysis, fact gathering, legal research, drafting legal documents, and other assigned projects
  • Assist paralegals in supporting labor, employment, personal injury, real estate, regulatory, transactional, and other legal matters
  • Organize and maintain accurate electronic legal files and matter records
  • Coordinate with external legal vendors and counsel to support onboarding and documentation
  • Track and process legal invoices and related administrative items
  • Support efficient legal matter management through accurate recordkeeping and timely follow-up.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to follow legal and administrative procedures

Qualifications - Required

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree
  • Completed, or will have completed by the internship start date, coursework equivalent to at least one year toward an undergraduate or graduate degree
  • Currently attending a college or university within commuting distance of Omaha, Nebraska
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organization, prioritization, and time/project management skills
  • Availability to work full-time in Omaha, Nebraska, during the summer and an average of 15-20 hours per week during the academic year

Qualifications - Preferred

  • Completion of at least two years of college-level study by the internship start date and enrollment in a Paralegal Studies program or a bachelors degree program in Pre-Law or a related field.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills for reviewing legal documents, identifying key facts, and supporting legal research activities.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative on assigned projects.
  • Exposure to case management systems, document management systems, or other records-management tools.
  • Coursework or experience involving legal research, legal writing, document review, fact gathering, case management, records management, or legal administrative support.

Physical and Mental Job Requirements

  • This position requires extended periods of sitting and extended hours in front of computer screens
  • Maintain concentration, focuses on tasks and can make timely decisions
