Mass Hire South Shore Career Center

Position: Youth Career Counselor

Full-time (35 hours) 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 P.M

Reports To: Program Supervisor - MassHire South Shore Career Center

Summary:The Youth Career Counselor works with the Youth Team to facilitate and promote the delivery of an

effective workforce development system for youth and young adults (age 14-24) in our service delivery

area, which includes 22 cities and towns on the South Shore. We seek an energetic person with an ability

to connect with and maintain relationships with young people; particularly those youth who have

significant barriers to success. Our ideal candidate demonstrates proficiency in written and oral

communication, excels in interpersonal relationships, possesses strong organizational abilities, leverages

creative thinking for problem-solving, collaborates effectively within teams, and has the capacity to travel

to all areas within our service delivery area.

Essential Functions:

Youth Development and Case Management

  • Build relationships with customers to gain trust and foster self-agency in their decisions.
  • Conduct intake and assessment interviews and create individualized career plans with short-term and long-term goals for participants.
  • Prepare youth for employment and/or training, including career exploration activities that lead to a good fit in a job or program. Work with youth on labor market research, job search strategies, creating and editing resumes and cover letters, work readiness skills development, and assessment of post-secondary options.
  • Follow customer's progress after program/employment placement.
  • Create opportunities for program participants that facilitate competency development through activities that focus on education, training, and occupation and life skills.
  • Evaluate and determine eligibility for programs and/or training monies.
  • Maintain files and records for each participant, and enter and maintain timely/accurate records and case notes in databases.
  • Maintain relationships with youth program vendors to assure timely communications about participants.
  • Stay informed about all local service and support providers and programs to refer/connect customers when appropriate.

Coordination of Activities & Outreach

  • Collaborate with Career Center Business Service Representatives to identify potential employer partners.
  • Conduct offsite recruitment and enrollment sessions.
  • Develop relationships with employers, and connect them to opportunities for student internships, apprenticeships, student job shadows, and teacher externships
  • Provide training assistance and program oversight to YouthWorks programs.
  • Conduct periodic surveys to assess programs and determine changing needs.
  • Develop audience specific marketing materials.
  • Participate in high school, college, and community organization career and resource fairs, work readiness trainings, and information sessions.
  • Create and maintain social media content and presence.
  • Participate in Youth Advisory Board meetings.
  • Provide written reports about youth programming when requested.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Either an Associate's Degree with at least three years of experience, or a Bachelors Degree is required, preferably in Counseling, Education, Social Work, Psychology, or a closely related field.
  • Experience providing job placement and/or career development services to young people.
  • Experience working with young people who face barriers to success.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, racial, and ethnic
  • backgrounds.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Capacity to comfortably use social media platforms.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of community resources and businesses in our region
  • Previous project management, database entry and reporting experience.
  • Prior work with court involved youth, and knowledge of the mission of the Department of Youth Services.
  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities (especially Haitian Creole or Mandarin) are highly preferred

This is a full-time, one year, fully benefited position on the City of Quincy payroll. Days and hours of

work are mainly Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., but the position requires flexibility

and the ability to occasionally work evenings/weekends to accommodate program needs. This position

will include travel to various locations across the South Shore region, so candidates must have a valid

Massachusetts driver's license and access to a reliable car. The final candidate will be required to agree

to a CORI check

Salary$57,000 - $63,000 range
