    Job Summary:

    The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) is seeking a Youth Corrections Administrator to assist with security operations at the Adobe Mountain School (AMS). This position is responsible for planning, directing, training, coordinating, and evaluating the work of the housing unit teams. This position is accountable for youth and staff safety; defusing and de-escalating violent and/or other critical situations; monitoring and evaluating security systems and protocols; updating security-related processes/procedures on a continuous basis; making recommendations for safety and security improvements; serving as a member of the AMS leadership team; responding to after-hours emergency situations; and improving AMS’s overall operational effectiveness. This position will also require the oversight of operations and programming of housing units as assigned.

    Job Duties:

    Supervises Managers to observe and evaluate work performance and provides indirect supervision to Sergeants, Youth Program Officers 3, and Youth Correctionals Officers; provides coaching; informs AMS leadership and security team of relevant security issues; ensures that staff maintain security, custody, control and accountability of youth population; ensures security devices are functional and/or repaired within appropriate time frames; inspects youth living areas and staff work areas to ensure compliance, security, sanitation and safety for staff and youth; ensures that all staff are trained on and in compliance with ADJC policies and procedures; and reviews background information for clearance into the facility.

    Ensures that staff interactions with youth, are complying with established therapeutic and rehabilitation guidelines; conducts training and coaching in the use of approved interventions related to job safety, de-escalation techniques, and security practices/protocols; reviews and responds to Incident Reports, Uses of Force, Critical Incident Debriefings, and Administrative Incident Reports; and oversees the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions at housing units and provides redirection as needed.

    Conducts workplace safety inspections; conducts administrative inquiries and provides recommendations for corrective action; prepares reports and briefings; assigns tasks and ensures completion; monitors facility for adequate staffing levels; and calibrates staff work schedules to provide proper shift coverage.

    Oversees emergency response plans; responds to emergency situations; participates in a variety of multi-disciplinary meetings; participates in executive decision making; and reviews/develops and implements operational policies and procedures.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

    Knowledge:
    -Federal, State and agency laws, rules, regulations, and policies and procedures governing youth populations.
    -Principles and practices of safety, security, custody and operations of a youth correctional facility.
    -Therapeutic intervention and de-escalation techniques in a correctional setting.-Communications systems to include portable and stationary two-way radio, cell phone, and other methods of communication.
    -Physical interventions, including self-defense, restraint and application of control equipment.
    -Policies and procedures regarding emergency preparedness and response as they pertain to a correctional setting.
    -Training principles and practices (e.g., facilitating training in restraint techniques, security training, therapeutic and de-escalation techniques).
    -Principles of personnel management, supervision, and public administration.

    Selective Preference(s):

    Preferred candidates will have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Corrections, Public Administration, Sociology, or Business Administration.

    Pre-Employment Requirements:

    Seven or more years of experience working in a correctional environment rehabilitating a youth population.

    Employment is contingent on the selected applicant passing a comprehensive background investigation.

    Current State of Arizona employees: In order to be considered for this position, it requires acceptable performance history as demonstrated by not have been issued a letter of suspension or have been involuntarily demoted within one year preceding this job posting close date, and have an overall rating of “meets expectations” or higher on the most recent employee performance evaluation.
