Job Description

Job Summary/Objective:

Youth Peer Support Specialist use aspects of their own mental health recovery to provide support, empowerment, and advocacy to adolescents. They work in partnership with a treatment team to assist youth in reaching their own recovery.

Essential Duties and Functions:

  • Supports and provides advocacy to adolescents involved in mental health services.
  • Shares aspects of their own mental health recovery to support an adolescent’s journey in finding their own path.
  • Participates in case consultation with the treatment team.
  • Actively works with the youth to address goals on the Individualized Plan of Service.
  • Maintains consistent communication with the adolescent.
  • Completes all necessary documentation.
  • Engages in recruitment activities which share information on YPSS services and referral processes. 

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma required
  • Per MDHHS guidelines individual must be between the ages of 18-28 years of age.
  • Individual must possess a history of involvement in receiving services in the mental health system and has reached a personal level of recovery in their own mental health symptoms.
  • Must be willing to share aspects of their own mental health recovery with others.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to work within a team setting.
  • Not excluded from participating in Medicaid, Medicare, or any other federal or Michigan health care programs.
  • Must support a trauma informed culture of safety to aid customers in their recovery process.
