As the Youth Programs and Recreation Coordinator, youll help create engaging recreation experiences for youth and families by coordinating after-school programming, building community partnerships, supporting recreation activities, and helping deliver seasonal camps and programs throughout the year.

Working alongside schools, community organizations, instructors, and fellow recreation professionals, youll help create safe, welcoming spaces where young people can discover new interests, stay active, and build meaningful connections. During the school year, youll help coordinate the ZONE After School Program, while summer months focus on camps, recreation programs, and community activities that keep Hillsboros parks and recreation system vibrant year-round.

About the Role

This is an active, collaborative position that coordinates recreation programs, after-school activities, facility operations, and community partnerships. Youll spend much of your time working directly with schools, recreation facilities, participants, instructors, and City staff to ensure programs operate safely, efficiently, and successfully.

What Youll Spend Time Doing

  • Coordinate daily operations of the ZONE After School Program serving Hillsboro middle schools.
  • Build partnerships with school staff, instructors, volunteers, and community organizations to expand recreation and enrichment opportunities.
  • Coordinate recreation programs, community events, facility operations, and rentals.
  • Help develop engaging activities that encourage participation, learning, recreation, and healthy lifestyles.
  • Coordinate staffing, room schedules, equipment, and daily program logistics.
  • Prepare recreation facilities, equipment, and supplies for programs and events.
  • Assist participants and customers with facility reservations, registrations, and program information.
  • Review facility rental agreements and help ensure contract requirements are met.
  • Monitor recreation facilities and equipment to promote safe operations and positive participant experiences.
  • Maintain schedules, records, inventories, and operational documentation.
  • Monitor supplies and coordinate purchasing needs.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and support for part-time and seasonal employees.
  • Identify challenges, solve problems, and continuously improve recreation services and participant experiences.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Associates degree in Business Administration, Recreation Administration, or a closely related field; and
  • Two (2) years of experience in parks facilities management, event management, or project management;

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid Drivers License and safe driving record.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • This is an active position that spends approximately 75% of the time working in recreation facilities, schools, parks, and other community settings, with the remaining time devoted to planning, coordination, and administrative responsibilities.
  • During the school year, the position primarily supports afternoon and evening programming, typically between 11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
  • During the summer, the schedule transitions primarily to daytime hours supporting sports camps and seasonal recreation programming.
  • Occasional weekend or special event work may be required.
  • Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and requires moderate physical activity, including setting up, moving, and storing recreation equipment and supplies, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Bilingual Incentive Pay Available

Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, ASL, or any other language spoken by over 10% of the City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census will receive a monthly 3% premium pay. The incentive is paid only on hours in paid status. Proficiency will be determined by a City-administered test.
