YOUTH SERVICES ASSOCIATE Full-time (40 hours per week) The successful candidate will be energetic and sociable, be able to provide excellent customer service, and have experience working with children or teens. Primary responsibilities include answering reference questions in-person and by phone, recommending books to youth of all ages, assisting families to discover the love of reading, helping patrons find resources for school assignments, and assisting patrons with the use of library equipment. The incumbent will also need to consistently enforce rules with the public. Additional responsibilities include conducting storytimes for preschoolers, programs for children birth to 12th grade, and representing the library by conducting classroom visits with students in Euclid. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Knowledge of children’s interests and pop culture useful, proficiency with Microsoft Office/Office 365 applications a plus. Library experience helpful, experience working directly with children is preferred. The ideal candidate will have a strong desire to learn about books and resources for youth. Valid Ohio Driver’s License required. Schedule: Monday and Thursday 8:00am-5:00pm, Tuesday and Wednesday 12:45pm-9:00pm, alternating Fridays 8:00am-5:00pm and Saturdays 8:30am-5:00pm. The Youth Services Associate assists in accomplishing that mission by providing reference services and conducting programs for children, young adults, parents, and teachers. POSITION DUTIES: 75% Public Service * Answers reference questions and locates library materials for patrons * Arranges interlibrary loans and reserves * Assists patrons in using library equipment * Promotes services and organizes displays of materials * Recommends materials to patrons * Supervises Youth Services Department in absence of Manager or Youth Services Librarian * Will be required to work public services points as assigned 20% Programming * Conducts school and community visits * Creates program materials for youth services programs * Maintains files of stories and songs for programs * Prepares and conducts programs for children and young adults, parents and teachers * Selects age appropriate materials and activities for programs 5% Miscellaneous * Alerts supervisor to problems encountered in work routines * Assists with maintaining assigned areas of the collection as directed by a librarian * Attends meetings and serves on internal committees * Maintains and increases knowledge and skills through attendance at meetings, conferences, training seminars and in-service training sessions * Participates in the Strategic Planning process * Performs additional duties and assignments, as requested QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training and/or Experience * Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. * Valid Ohio driver's license with an acceptable driving record * Experience working with children and young adults preferred. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics * Ability to arrange items in alphanumeric and/or subject order * Ability to develop a rapport with children, young adults, parents and teachers * Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to maintain accurate records * Ability to prepare and conduct programs for children, young adults, parents and teachers * Ability to prioritize work, engage in a variety of tasks simultaneously and consistently meet deadlines. * Ability to tactfully and effectively communicate with and work with patrons and staff in a personable and professional manner. * Ability to interact with persons of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds for the purpose of providing professional service * Ability to work cooperatively with schools and community organizations * Ability to work effectively with current and emerging technologies * Ability to work within budgetary restraints * Knowledge of a wide range of children’s and young adult books and authors* * Knowledge of children’s and young adult interests and popular culture * Knowledge of CLEVNET system, bibliographic databases, Dewey Decimal Classification System* * Knowledge of the American Library Association Library Bill of Rights* * Knowledge of Core Competencies required for position* * Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements* * Knowledge of library services, policies and procedures* * Knowledge of materials processing* * Proficient with Microsoft Office applications * Proficient with print and online resources; including searching skills. e-mail, websites, databases and online operating systems* * Understanding of patron confidentiality requirements and ethics responsibilities under Ohio law* *May be acquired after hire PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work requires light physical effort including very frequent standing, walking and lifting of materials. Requires the ability to operate business office and library equipment; the ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set up and maintain work files; lift, retrieve and provide materials to patrons in a timely manner. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work performed in good working conditions – occasionally subjected to poor physical or environmental conditions and/or occasional health and safety hazards. There is daily use of a computer. Position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, and requires periodic participation and attendance at library events and meetings. |
