Position Description

Department History Overview

Harris County Resources for Children and Adults was founded in 1966 as the Harris County Child Welfare Board to provide support services for the children taken under the wing of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Fifty years later, Harris County Resources for Children and Adults still provides this support. But the now-county department has expanded services for early prevention, intervention, and adult services.

Brief Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Community Youth Service (CYS) Supervisor, and in collaboration with area school districts and other governmental entities, this position provides school-based crisis intervention/prevention, short case management, assessment, service coordination, and referral services for at-risk students and their families. The position supports safety and stability, links to services, and maintains accurate and confidential documentation in the agency database consistent with program and agency requirements. Additionally, this position requires providing response, and debriefing support after the loss of a youth, school district personnel or a traumatic event.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides crisis counseling and case management services to at risk youth and their families.

  • Assists with safety planning, short-term problem solving, and follow-up.

  • Provides crisis debriefing as member of the district crisis response team as needed.

  • Conducts screenings and assessments to identify strengths and needs.

  • Develops short-term care plans in collaboration with youth, families, and school personnel.

  • Coordinates services across multiple systems as appropriate.

  • Connects youth and families with community-based and school-based resources.

  • Follows up to support engagement and remove barriers.

  • Networks with new and established community resources to increase knowledge of services.

  • Prepares and maintains comprehensive, accurate and timely case documentation in database.

  • Maintains records consistent with confidentiality and agency standards.

  • Promotes and markets CYS services (including presentations) to school staff and community members.

  • Collaborates with school district personnel, community agencies and internal partners. Participates in meetings and staffing's as required.

Requirements

Education:

  • A Bachelors degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, Counseling, or closely related field.

Experience:

  • Must have a minimum of one (1) year of paid experience providing crisis counseling and case management services to youth and families.

Licensure:

  • Must have reliable transportation with a valid Texas driver's license and auto liability insurance.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of youth development, family systems, crisis intervention, and community resources

  • Effective written and oral communication and documentation skills

  • Proficiency with case-management databases and Microsoft Office applications

  • Ability to engage youth and families, maintain boundaries, and ensure confidentiality

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and collaborate effectively

  • Handle stressful situations with tact and diplomacy

  • Be self-motivated and possess excellent time management skills

  • Must be able to conduct home visits.
