Description
Overview:
A busy, welcoming Upper East Side family seeks a fantastic governess for 2 children, aged 5-years and 6-years. The schedule is likely to be Monday through Friday, from 1.00pm-6.30pm, plus one full day/morning every weekend, if possible. Ideally the role will begin early September.
Responsibilities:
Both children will be attending prestigious local schools and so the focus for the governess will be on supporting their continued academic development, as well as on their general well-being and emotional development. Responsibilities will therefore include:
Picking up the children from school when required and taking them to any after school activities or engagements
Supporting with evening homework and overseeing general school work
Developing their fine and gross motor skills, practising pen holding, writing, using scissors etc
Ensuring a strong emphasis on etiquette, general manners and respectful, appropriate and kind behavior
Help with evening reading and with instilling a love of literature
Encouraging the children's creativity and imagination
Maintaining gentle but firm boundaries, comfortable encouraging the children to take responsibility and teaching them about consequences
Assisting in their sporting activities, encouraging regular outdoor play and exercise
Occasional light cooking, tidying and general organisation, although this is a fully staffed household and so this won't be a regular requirement
Regular domestic and international travel with the family including to the UK, Europe, and the Hamptons
Occasional babysitting or proxy parenting (the parents sometimes travel without the children)
Maintaining the educational routine over the holidays - planning fun activities that tie in with their curriculum and learning, as well as a consistent approach to the fundamental skills
Preparation for travel including packing, planning and scheduling activities, and general coordination
Organising enriching activities and museum visits for days off school/weekends or during holidays
Requirements:
Organized and professional, while also warm and friendly
Educated and very focused on childhood development
Comfortable supporting children with school projects and homework
Considerate, proactive, full of initiative and with strong communication skills
Previous experience with similar aged children and in a fully staffed household essential
Strong swimmer and happy to supervise and engage with children in and around water
A flexible and pitch-in approach to the role and general household support
A strong and verifiable background in supporting children educationally
French and/or Spanish-speaking candidates would be preferred (but this isn't essential)
Dog-friendly - the family occasionally care for a small, friendly dog
Available from 7th September at the latest
Salary and Benefits:
From $50-$65/hr, DOE
Full health cover provided, including vision and dental
The family can also sponsor a J1 visa for UK candidates that meet the criteria and are a perfect fit for the role
